I've actually been thinking about this lately. While I do see a new Saturn modchip topic almost every other day (hell, I even made one when I was new here!), at the end of the day its not hurting anyone. Perhaps the negative responses in these topics could be a little less harsh, but I don't think there's anything wrong with directing someone to an old topic about the same subject if it has some good info.

One thing that I would suggest is possibly converting some of the repeating topics into guides that could be put in with the rest of them on the main site. Stickies would be another option, but I can understand why some people wouldn't want a ton of them on the main pages.

I've seen plenty of "How much is this worth" / "Craigs List Ebay" / "I need advice" threads lately when we already have them.

I'm not an elitist, but we have a google search for a reason. Fist and second time, no biggie, but some people are creating the same thread several times. It's annoying.

Also, sometimes I think we need a "I can't use google or think for myself" thread. There's been a surge of "what should I buy?", "do I like sega games?" and "is this a good deal?" etc. threads. I don't mind the mods cleaning up this stuff up at all. And the worst a mod has said to anyone was something close to, "Really? Three threads about the same subject?", so they aren't being jerks.

I haven't seen a lot of first time gamers starting threads like "New to the site, love the original Kirby game for the GBC. Any games you'd suggest that are very similar?". I think that's fine. But we get new members starting threads like "I'm starting to collect games. What should I collect?".

And this is coming from a new member.

It keeps the board from getting too cluttered, especially by new people that don't know the layout.

I just wish people would politely redirect new forum members to these threads and not have an attitude about it.

OR MAKE THEM A STICKY.

SpaceBooger, here is a suggestion: there are a LOT of threads that are trying to act like "mini-forums." the movies thread is a good example of this, the what's this worth? thread, etc. i don't understand why the forums aren't restructured/condensed and we don't just have a "movie" forum where everyone can make a thread about shutter island or mean girls or whatever and not get left out if they stop checking a dedicated thread encompassing all films ever for a couple days.

the genre forums seem like a waste of space to me.

that's all i have, i feel like i've reduced my constructive criticism to just plaing bitching now so i'm going to lay low for a second.

I'm glad someone has brought this up because it's been really turning me off to this fourm lately. I've noticed a few users are really bad at acting like there mods (lost within). Fourms tend to go down hill when you get a lot of users acting like there jr mods because they've been on the fourm for a while. Or when you got little cliques ganging up on people. Not to sound cocky but I would think a website like this would want users like me with large gaming collections on this website. I talk about this website on other fourms and try to bring extra traffic In along with retro stores I shop at. But it's a turn off when you have a bunch of teenagers running around acting like little jr mods.

When I first started on the forums, I tried to go into the backlog, but eventually I just gave up and marked everything read. I tried searching if I had a question until I'd been here a while and had probably seen most questions that had popped up in the last month.Granted the search kinda sucks, but still, some new people don't put any effort into looking at all. We've had, what, 5 or 6 new topics started on issues with Saturn burns in the last month alone plus the $41,3000 Stadium Events got posted at least 4 times as well. Yeah, we don't want 20 stickies at the top of each section like official boards for a certain game at the maker's site, but we don't really want a ton of duplicate threads clogging things up either.

We just have to strike a balance which means there will be some annoying "hey, thread over here" messages and mod pruning and splicing.

i agree with jfe2's comment. really i don't mind the common recurring post. hell sometimes we end up into new conversations. but what i don't like and i have been noticing lately is that there are some members that degrade new comers. we were all new before and as jfe said even he made a recurring post! hell so did I! but back then no one said anything bad about it. they said hi told me what i needed to know and i was happy. of course i got constructive criticism but that's how i learned the rules. the only reason i stayed here (considering that i have not stayed to another forum for more than a week) is because people were kind and treated me with respect. i just think we could be a little kinder to newcomers. it's understandable if they are just trolling or what not.

If a thread is really old I understand making a new one, if a thread is relatively new then that thread should be bumped. There is nothing wrong with letting someone know there is a thread with info for them concerning their topic. Should you be rude? No. But directing someone is okay. Plus don't we have forum guidelines now.

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=19455&start=0

It mostly states to be friendly, to get use to the site before making threads/posting and to do a search before posting. If there is a rift on this site its only becasue they don't like the rules that are now official.

ultimately, I think this is the issue. Redirecting is fine. But being rude is not. Especially considering the rules of the forum.

There are a some of repeats, I mean how many times do we see Stadium Events on yet another new post?. Why not add to existing Stadium Events post? A little effort to search and keep forums more organized. Especially if topic recently was mentioned, maybe use that Search or look under View New Posts and go back a day or two.

On the other hand, some people do get discouraged and frustrated by negative comments and stop contributing. Maybe if a repeat post is spotted instead of razzing about it one could politely mention more info here and add the older post link?

I think some stickies and "rebooting" the regular threads once a month or something like that would improve the problem.
