My wife couldn't wait for the Amazon pre-order to ship, so she made me cancel it and pick it up from the store today. We have been playing it all night and here are our impressions in a nutshell...
Awesome!
The tracks are great, the characters and backgrounds are bright and colorful, and the controls are spot on. Drifting in this game is much easier than in the Mario Kart games. Even my wife can manage to drift through tracks with ease!
We played against each other in split screen races for about an hour, then battled each other in each vs. mode for a bit. After that, I played through the first grand prix and managed to get first place in all four tracks.
Right before we put it away for the night I tried the time trial for the first track and clocked in at 42 seconds. Not bad considering the world record is 36 seconds on that track!
Anyone on the fence should really give this game a shot. The demo just doesn't do it justice IMO.

Dan Dickhead gave ASR a 6/10 over at EG. Must have had a lousy night with the missis. I think I'll be going with the DS cart, I hear it compares favourably to Speed Racer, another favrourite of mine.
