I suspect their engine is potent enough they could recreate any classic beat-em-up they wanted. Once they release this, you should query them as to whether they've considered other remakes.

Ugh I feel so dumb, never knew you could kick the bulldozer away in Sor3 during that part. Used to lose so many lives there... time to boot it up I suppose.

There already is an engine like this, it's called Open Beats Of Rage. If you can get into the scripting, you could remake any Beat 'Em Up... or more. Some folks have already made shmups, platformers and run 'n guns.

I was working on a game within this engine myself, but ultimately gave up after a hard drive failure. Been tinkering with it again as of late...

Been following these guys off and on for awhile now. Downloaded the current version about a month ago and tried it out. It was too difficult with the keyboard (for me). I finally borrowed a USB adapter from a friend so I could use my HRAP2SA. The game is a dream. The gameplay is spot on and fluid. The characters included play great, the new Adam sprite fits right in with the others and the AI is tough but fair. This is a quality job, better than any official remake I have ever seen.

I hold Guardian Heroes on a high pedestal and Streets of Rage 2 is a close second. Dare I say it? This game possibly trumps them both.

The Beats of Rage engine is solid, but the remake engine is light years ahead of it IMO.

Are you talking about OpenBOR, or the original Beats of Rage?

Because, two completely different things. Pretty much anything can be done with OpenBOR, thanks to its scripting engine. Beats of Rage is far too basic for that.

LOL, yep. I was thinking of the original BOR.

If you can, check out a few OpenBOR mods like Night Slashers X and Art of Fighting:Beats of Rage Remix III to get a good idea of what it's capable of.

I am really interested in why the 2d beatemup genre is carried on by the fans. I mean, just look at this:

Why isnt Sega doing this for the download services? Instead we get this:

and if you are in Japan, this:

Both are a far cry from the fan remake.

I'd say it's because Sega (and almost every other company, for that matter) is completely out of touch with what their fan-base wants.

It's too bad more companies can't be like Valve. Say what you want about their games, at least they know how to treat their fans.

Like it or not, the type of people that frequent RacketBoy aren't exactly huge in number compared to the mindless masses. As long as profits rule the day, you won't see major investment into genres like the older style scrolling beat 'em ups, as it doesn't sell nearly as well as another God of War clone will.

I don't like the current state of the games market, but I can understand why it is the way it is. People have food to buy and rent to pay, and will make games for money first, and the love of it second.
