Happens all the time on XBL and PSN. On PC, thankfully you can usually find decent servers to play on, rather than playing with P2P dipshits like on PSN/XBL. On PSN I just mute the dipshits, on XBL I rate them down and block communications.
I was playing Uncharted 2 the other night and I was on fire, I had 30 kills and 3 deaths at the end of a standard deathmatch 50. What's the next thing I hear from some douchebag on the other team? "OMG you fucking suck, your team sucks I can't fucking believe I got beaten by a fucking shit team, this game is so fucking broken" He was a level 50, had 20 deaths and 7 kills... Yeah... The other team sucks, right... I was laughing so hard at him. I think that just enraged him further. The next match he was on my team and spent the entire time he was in the game team killing me. What a fucking cry baby.
Sometimes I hate console multiplayer so much, all thanks to these dick heads that either act all 'big man' when they beat you by the smallest of margins and then cry like a bitch when they get their ass handed to them. It's so annoying. I wish there were more people online like the guy I played on SFIV the other night, we had a couple of matches and he beat me fair and square, he pointed out mistakes I keep making in a polite manner, showed me how to play the game better and essentially sparred for a while. Why can't I play against more people like that more often?
I wish there was a way of filtering matchmaking so that you could only play with people who have favourable reviews on XBL. I'd love it so that I could have a filter that disallowed anyone with a single bad rating to play with me, maybe that would flush out the vast majority of children and douchebags on XBL?

The guy's that talk crap are the guy's that I teabag for 5 minutes after killing them(-_-) wrote:Beat them in the game. It's the most satisfying feeling ever. I remember playing Killzone with friends one time, and one guy was spewing out profanity and calling us faggots, his own team, for being unable to support him so he couldn't get any kills. It got to the point where we were so annoyedAck wrote:No, no, you don't just beat them. What you do is you find something they will never expect, and you use it to CRUSH them. Some of the guys I know have reduced folks to tears in multiplayer games because we did something they never thought would work, and we hammered it. Then, at the end of the match, you tell them if they had been more polite you wouldn't have crushed them so. Or you make fun of them, and watch how they don't come back to that server ever again. Or better yet, that club. We had guys come in like that in our gaming club. One night, having gotten fed up with a single guy's trash talk from the last few weeks, I spent an evening hunting him in COD4 with nothing but the knife. He never came back. Wouldn't have happened if he hadn't talked like that.J T wrote:When I can, it is somewhat fun to beat them. Also, I try to be friendly with players who don't do it, and you can meet some good folks like that.
three of us just followed him around non stop, blocking his path an whatever else we could do. There were a few times where he went to retrieve ammo and we blew up the ammo crate. He was furious. None of us responded on the headset which made him even angrier. Eventually he left and everyone else who had headsets burst out laughing and started talking again. Very satisfying. And hunting down assholes with only the knife is also pretty damn fun. It's frustrating having to avoid playing a game simply because I dont want to have to listen to people be stupid over their headsets.

There's no repercussions for your actions on the internet, and people tend to forget there are living, breathing people on the other side of all those 1's and 0's. Online ridicule is a real problem and is getting worse. There's need to be some kind of accountability.
We can only hope that one of these fifteen year old kids slips up and happens to call someone an obscene name in the outside world. Maybe then they will learn a hard lesson.
My only solution to dealing with these online jerks, is to not play online unless it's with friends or a clan/guild that has good sportsmanship.
I always had an idea for this sort of problem though. Just like a message forum has mods, perhaps online games could too? Not necessarily the host, but an unbiased party hired by Microsoft or Sony to monitor matches. For instance, someone would spectate each match of a particular game and if someone was caught saying something like "faggot", they would be booted and suspended for 24 hours. I know it's harsh, but it would help clean up the trash talk real quick.
Really just a thought. I'm not sure if or how it could work in practice. Not every match would be monitored mind you, but you wouldn't know if a mod was there or not so you'd have to be on your best behavior.

Re: Whatever happened to manners?
I also really dislike all this foul-mouthed online gamer culture. I never used to be big on swearing but since I've really gotten into online gaming over the last few years I am much more apt to pepper my statements with "fuck"s and "shit"s. However I do refrain from use of the three big words pointed out by J T(well, to me). Saying dammit or fucking hell might not be the nicest way of expressing my displeasure but at least it's not targeted at anyone. It's just letting out frustrations, I suppose.
Using words as insults to others, however, just seems wrong. If you're jokingly doing it with friends I can halfway forgive it because there's no malice behind the intentions.
However calling out strangers and using terms in a derogatory manner against them shouldn't be the norm. "That guy" should be called out on it and if he continues, just kicked out of the game. However, often it seems as if that guy is EVERY guy. Obviously, he isn't since you hear complaints about it often enough and there's these threads. Regardless it does seem a ton of folks are kind of abusing the online systems available to blindly spew words that they probably don't even understand the painful histories of.
Edit: The most common word targeted at me whenever I play online seems to be "faggot." My solution to the matter is to just try flirting it up a bit with the presumably homophobic gamer until he excuses HIMSELF from the game.

Now THAT is an excellent story. Kudos to you good sir, you'd have fit right in with the AUCGC.(-_-) wrote:I remember playing Killzone with friends one time, and one guy was spewing out profanity and calling us faggots, his own team, for being unable to support him so he couldn't get any kills. Re: Whatever happened to manners?
I think this is subjective, I've met much different crowds playing Halo than I have playing TF2.
Re: Whatever happened to manners?
I would like to be able to do this too.Niode wrote: I wish there was a way of filtering matchmaking so that you could only play with people who have favourable reviews on XBL. Also, you and I should play on SFIV sometime. I like the game, but I'm getting bored with it because I'm sick of losing all the time, but I don't mind if I have someone cool to spar with and learn from.

I'm surprised this went on for two pages without this comic being posted.
When I play on TF2 I generally don't run into any issues like that. Every so often someone in chat will get pissy because he feels his team sucks, but in general people don't pay attention to chat much, and most people are too lazy to get voice set up.

I was hoping you would post Mr. Popo, just so we could all see Nickfil's brilliant quote in your sig.
