"Uncle Owen! This R2's got a bad motivator unit, look!"
"Hey, what are you trying to push on us?!"

2)For example, "Return of the Jedi" was originally going to be titled "Revenge of the Jedi" until someone pointed out to Lucas that revenge would be out of character for a jedi.
1)Because there is a Stars Wars marathon on, and although I have the day off, I'm doing some work at the pc, which is near a television.
2)Duh.

There is no R4 in A New Hope, as it's referred to as a R2 unit. That is why I am confused.

Han shot first.
Amen.
Hallelujah.
You are incorrect. The red astromech droid was named R4-D4 in A New Hope (and yeah thats the title). It was also only referred to as a Droid with a bad motivator, not an R2 unit.
I'm ashamed to know this, but the red droid is named R5-D4.

Exactly. At least you get it.
I was hoping that someone may have had some insight to the difference of R2s vs. R4s. Apparently, although they look completely different, in the Lucas-verse they are all the same.

Going by the Expanded Universe, the R2 is a general astromech droid, while the R4 is a cheaper consumer version designed more for vehicle maintenance, as the average consumer doesn't have a fancy starship. The R5 uses a similar flower pot style of head like the R4 compared to the R2's dome but it was a general failure. It was a cost-cutting version of the R2 that didn't add anything, and consumers didn't bite.

I guess I just long for continuity.

The main issue is that 1. George has the last word and 2. George doesn't have that good of a memory sometimes.

I was on phone detail for niece birth, but yeah we are all fine.
As for the question:
This is what happens when you have Expanded Universe (EU) take over after the creator has let their product sit. Back when A New Hope came out they released the bad motivator droid as a toy named R5-D4 (
http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=r5+d4& ... rom=&_ipg=). It is unknown if the screen writer or actor flubbed that R5 was an R2 (some speculate that it was done intentionally to show that Luke was just a simple farmer - I call this EU hogwash). But if you want to get into EU statements, the R5 were created to be budget minded R2s.
In Attack of the Clones Obiwan uses an R4, which looks strikingly similar to an R2, but is an older model than the R5. Actually that model R4-P17 is considered female.
And there are several R4s in the old Trilogy, but they have peaked heads instead of domes:
R4-E1 is seen in Mos Eisley (Red and White like R5-D4)
R4-M9 is seen in the Death Star (in a more Imperial Black and White color scheme)
Wookiepedia has more information on this than you will ever care to know

Glad to hear everyone is fine.
And, thanks. I think.
