No, I bought it expecting a tactical action game, Like it was advertised. and yes this is my first MGS game, I always thought like most action games regardless of place in the series, it would ease you into the game first then throw series action at you, but this one seems to be dependent on the earlier games in the series.
MGS isn't most action games. Just because every other game has such a shallow story that you can pick them up in any order doesn't mean that all should be that way. Maybe because this game takes such a different approach to story and action than other games do, THAT'S why everyone was making a big deal about it?
And like I said, this is like picking up Jedi before Empire. It's not going to make any sense.
ALL Metal Gear Solid games are overrated and overhyped. That said, I still always manage to get some enjoyment out of them. They are not without their flaws and Hideo Kojima is not a god, but they are all worth playing. I have a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 I'm going to get around to playing at some point

So, do you keep your games with you in your tower or do you just come down from it to play them once in awhile?
Metal Gear is just one of those series that only gives you as much as you put into it I guess. The cutscenes are long, there may be less gameplay than most people expect, and the story confuses the shit out of people, but the amount of care in the series is practically unparalleled. The amount of content in them, jokes, references, and other mindfucks are what make them amazing. MGS3 is probably the best example of this. There are tons of conversations in the game to listen to if you call up people on the codec at certain times or after specific events. There are little things you notice that you didn't see on your first playthrough. It's all the little details and care in the series that makes it awesome for me. And what's most refreshing is being able to play the entire game without killing a single person.

The most enjoyment I ever get out of MGS games is on the second/third/fourth etc playthrough. Getting all the dogtags on MGS2, or getting the Stealth Camo and Bandanna on MGS1. MGS1 is awesome when you have Stealth Camo, you can get away with stuff and just have fun with the game. Same with MGS2.

Holy Crap yes. The most enjoyable unecessary function I've ever seen in a game is the ability to use the second controller as a camera at any point in mgs4. It's so much fun trying to catch the guards doing amusing things or even setting up pictures to take.

Wuh?! Wow, I never even knew of this! There's so many easter eggs in this game. That's amazing.
I didn't see anyone mention it but if you've yet to check out MGS:VR Missions you should give that a try too.
The "VR Disc" features over 300 missions testing the player's sneaking and fighting skills, as well as less conventional tests, such as murder mysteries, battling giant genome soldiers, and three missions where the player controls the Cyborg Ninja. Special features include trailers for Metal Gear Solid, a preview artwork of Metal Gear RAY from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and a "photoshoot" mode to take pictures of Mei Ling and Naomi.
We had a blast with that game when it was released in the states. I spent a whole weekend with a friend of mine taking turns at each mission. We finally beat them all after three days of working at it.
