Tell me, do any of them allow mid-battle saving?
Front Mission 3 suffers from slowdown, so it can be annoying to play at times (though you can turn off battle animations iirc). Front Mission 4 has a more confusing system than Front Mission 3 (specifically the links system). Honestly, the best FM game for a newcomers is FM1, which you can get on the DS.

while front mission 3 is my favorite (and honestly i never knowticed a slow down in it but im accustomed to play ps1 games anyways). i might have to agree with Mr.popo. especially story wise, you should try the first one on the ds. it's not my favorite and i honestly think it's one of the hard ones out there, it's still a good place to start. FM4 while cheap might turn you off. but then again it might not. either 1 or 3 is your best places to start.

I don't own a DS, so if I played FM1 it would be the translated SFC ROM.

Which would you say has shorter battles? My gaming sessions tend to be about 30-45 minutes at once, and I know sometimes they can drag out on turn based strategy games.

just to tell you FM1 does have a SFC translation out there. but....hmm i couldn't really say witch has the shorter battles since they all have long battles. but most likely 3 since you have a limit a 4 person limit on the battle field. allowing the battles to be shorter in turn. you can always quick save in just about every FM game there is....im not sure about FM though so if anyone knows just say.

Played only until the second or third mission of FM1 on DS and recall you could quick save.

My first experience with FM was with 4 on the PS2, was one of the first games I beat on the system and it made me love the whole FM universe so I never get it when everybody says how bad it was and how the others are better. What game at 2.99 could be bad? You can't complain. I have 1 and 3 on my backlog and already had the japanese 5 iso for a long time waiting for the translation to be done.

Even though I don't really care much for Front Mission, I love seeing fan translations of games. Go Nerds!

you are actually right that the price warrants a buy and for that price you can't go wrong because it is a decent game. i still can't say it's the best though. just my least favorite.
