What about future games that might need an update, sometimes it gives you this thing where you must update or games you bought off the shelf need a newer firmware to work

The NME is a mod chip. It is attached to the motherboard of the DVD drive, and has a couple wires running out of the DVD drive's box to the main 360 motherboard to disable the network while it's running. I never flashed my DVD drive's firmware. The last time I had my 360 online it updated to the crappy bobblehead dashboard, and I bought a couple more games. No problems with that update and I believe that was a major one. I think that's the reason for the games getting patched. When the modchip detects a patched game being read, it kicks in and boots the disk. Otherwise the 360 remains unmodified.

I wasn't aware there was a modchip out for the 360...looks like they were more popular back in 2007 before I got my console. Seems like it does the same thing as flashing the drive though but also gives you a little extra protection.

Sadly from what I've read even with a modchip you can get banned from live. So best to keep modified consoles off of the network even if your playing originals. Losing the ability to install games to the HDD is a real killer...

So I modded my 360 with a chip,
the guy who did it said that he will do me free updates, wtf?

He said new games will not run and you need an update. So how should I know when I need an update?
What about those games that you put in and they tell you they need to install an update or they won't run?

Second thing is that people told me, when I got a modded 360 I can't get online, do I take it that its worthless to have an ethernet wire connected to the net?

I still think it's worth having it connected if you like to stream music/video/etc from your PC to your xbox, no?

You can still play the games when it says there is an update. You just need to choose the 'do not update' option. The game will still play. It's not like the PS3 where it forces you to sit through an excruciatingly long update process before you can play a game.

then why did the guy tell me there is an update otherwise the games won't work,
he said last time there was an update was like 6 months ago, and the time before that it was 2 years ago.

I am not sure what is he talking about.

As for streaming, I am not a music fan, and as video. I got a mac so I don't think it will play nice.

Hey can I play those 360 compatible original Xbox games back ups?
There were few games I missed on from the original Xbox era

No idea why he told you that, i've never had a game yet that has forced me to update.

Regarding playing xbox backups, I don't think there is a chip that will allow this. I think that it only allows you to play backups of 360 games and not xbox games. I could be wrong, but I've never heard of xbox backups running on a 360.

Unless the modder who worked on your 360 did the JTAG hack or installed a cygnos/similar, he flashed your DVD drive which may or may not have involved an actual mod chip. If it's JTAG'd you don't have to worry about Xbox live for much longer because they can easily see that and will ban you almost instantly.

Assuming you're only dealing with the drive hack when mentioning updates he was probably talking about updates to iXtreme, which is the modified DVD drive firmware he installed for you.

If possible ask him what version he used. If he is worth his salt it was iXtreme LT, which came out 2 weeks ago. If it's anything else you will almost surely be flagged soon and banned in the next wave.

LT does not care what you try to load, it will boot any game including new ones. The responsibility is on the user to make sure they're using good rips. This differs from previous versions because they included lots of stealth checking and new games need to be patched or use an activation disc, both of which will get you banned.

In short iXtreme LT is the safest possible firmware for playing backups on Live, but you should always assume you will get banned as it is a question of when not if. Ask the modder what version you have and if the answer isn't LT, tell him to make good on his offer to update you for free.

I do not want to play online,
I know this sounds weird, but I wanted to download some of the original Xbox games.
Since I am banned from online, thats why I asked will it run original xbox backups

Is there any way to know WHEN do I need to backup, or what is installed on my modded 360?

he made it very clear that it won't run PAL games or play online, I am pretty sure he didn't install anything new because he said the last update was 6 months ago, not to mention I already modded it like a week ago, so unless you he is super fast I don't think he got the new update within a week
