Well, its not too tall and its thicker than most food boxes, so it will be more stable if your using just one. Heck, sideways would be even better and hold up a NES half shell up off the ground. So no it wasn't random.
Painting on cardboard is always a bad idea...it can make the paint look "fuzzy" due to the texture of cardboard and the paper/fuzz that comes off from it.
The idea is that only the underside middle of the shell that isn't being painted is sitting on the box so that none of the edges are touching the ground. I guess both of you thought I meant flattening out the box. I meant an arrangement like this quick and dirty example:

But a flat color Krylon Fusion spray, make sure you spray light and even, and you'll be satisfied with the results. Just make sure to give it enough time to cure so you wont scratch it off easily. But I HIGHLY recommend using Krylon Fusion. Here's my thread of the SNES I did...
I no longer have any pics of the Gamecube I sprayed (black) but it came out good too. I even put a non-gloss clear coat on it and it still looked good.
Kiko68 wrote:If you're going to paint it, use Krylon Fusion paints. It "bonds to plastic" so peeling won't be a problem. As long as you do a semi-professional job (light sanding, a few individual coats, etc.) it should look fine. You can find Krylon Fusion in Walmart or any other hardware store. Comes in a ton of colors too. Hope this helps!

Exactly! And definitely be sure to at least clean the system before you spray. You can't expect the paint to bond to the plastic if there's all grim on it. I wouldn't say sanding is absolutely needed, but as you can see in the thread I linked, I used a VERY fine sand block lightly.
Off topic, but I have a Super Game Boy that looks like a SNES cart except taller and with a slot for Game Boy carts. What's a Super Gameboy 2?

I've gotten just as many questions about that Super Gameboy 2 as the actual paint job! Why did that guy have to have it in there when he took that picture?

I think it's regular spray paint price, especially in the Wal-Mart. Something like $5 a can, I really can't recall. One can should be enough depending on how you spray it. When my SNES was sprayed, the can was held a little further away than usual to help get a very light and even coat. Doing it this way though wastes a lot of paint. One can was enough to cover my SNES, but I don't think I even did a second coat (does it say in my thread?).
Man I haven't used my Super Game Boy in a while. I gave all my games and my classic Game Boy to my cousins and they threw everything away. Little dicks.
Also, I am very impressed with the paint job on the SNES. I must not look at mine that often anymore. The game slot is a bit hidden since it is on the bottom shelf, but I don't remember it being gray. Looks fantastic.
