The French electronic duo??? I went through a couple months where I listened to it a lot. I actually had a session yesterday.

As for my fav bands. I could never really list a top 5... that'd be a bit ridiculous for me due to the way I listen to music. I listen to music based on the action I'm doing... certain bands, despite if I actually like them or not, I will listen to based on if they assist in a specific action. Some bands put me to sleep, while others motivate me into working, others keep me from having road rage, etc etc.

For instance - NIN puts me to sleep
Prodigy and Justice put me to work
Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds help me drive
The Faint and other Indie bands I like to dance to when I'm drunk

my last.fm account relatively reflects this. It records everything that I play at my house, which is being played usually 24/7. But it only gets what's playing at my house...

If I had to list who I couldn't live with out. Like if I had to remove all my music from my server and keep only 5 bands.

hrmmm

Peter Gabriel - love em!... err or Leonard Cohen. I like them both for the same reason. I don't know why, I just find their voices sexy.

Nine Inch Nails - there is just way to much music in here, I'd get tons of songs out of the deal, and it's my prime sleep motivator

Skinny Puppy - has a fond place in my heart. Ever since I figured out that they put me to sleep when high on drugs like acid or coke, I never stopped listening to them. I don't do drugs anymore, but they are still awesome!

RJD2 - really good hip-hop/electronic sound. It is useful for a lot of stuff.

The Offspring - yep, I said the Offspring. They're probably the one band I've listened to the most in my life (excluding stuff that my parents listened to when I was very little). I remember when their first album came out, and I remember when their most recent album came out. I own every single one. I don't know why... they are just versatile to my uses of music. Great for driving, sleeping, working, everything.

NIN (of course)
Phish
The Grateful Dead
John Hartford
P-Funk

Seek ye out some John Hartford. That's where the whole hippie bluegrass thing started. Saw YMSB last week, they played 2 Hartford songs, Holdin' and Boogie. Last time I saw String Cheese they played a Hartford song too, Steam Powered Aereoplane. Too few people know about Hartford, when he should be considered (because he is) a giant of American music. Shame we lost him so soon.

Coming up with a top 5 is rather hard, but I thought about it and these are my selections. Most of these bands I have been listening since I was like 14/15 (I am 31 now) though Mountain Goats I probably didn't get into until I was 24 or 25. An ex girlfriend made a mix of their tunes and I have been hooked since.

1. Sonic Youth
2. Further
3. The Mountain Goats
4. Archers of Loaf
5. Sebadoh

However, I do have some honorable mentions: Velocity Girl, Unwound, Versus, Yo La Tengo, Beachwood Sparks, Afghan Whigs, The Clash and Nirvana

Wow, this is tough. My music habits have changed a lot in the past few years, I used to have my finger on the pulse of new bands, but for at least 2 years my radio dial is stuck on either ESPN radio or NPR. Beastie Boys will always remain a favorite of mine, but I'm also going to list a composer or two, and one isn't really a typical band.

Beastie Boys
J.S Bach
Buena Vista Social Club
L.V Beethoven
Aphex Twin

1. Sonic Youth
Nice call on Sonic Youth - they almost cracked my top 5. I'm in the minority that probably enjoys their 2000s output more than their earlier stuff - but only marginally - in any case almost all of it (as well as the various SY side projects) is good stuff.

I saw Justice last weekend at Webster Hall in NYC. They brought it hard, real hard.
