Nickelback is NOT a good argument for autotune.
Frankly, I occasionally enjoy the super-distorted "robot" autotuned stuff more as it is an obvious use of the tool and therefore you can judge it's worth as such. For example, a lot of people knock Kanye West's last album for it's use of autotune because it makes him sound like he can sing. In contrast, I like it because it makes him sound like a futuristic robot and because it provides sounds that he couldn't produce himself - and does so plainly and clearly. In contrast to unimaginative and unartisitic droll like Nickelback, there isn't much "hidden" voice engineering on those tracks. It's right up front and tries to emphasize inventive uses of the tool.
That said, auto-tuning has been overdone in the last few years and lost the retro/novelty factor that it had for a short time when it started becoming popular.
