A lot of things died out about the same time the Dreamcast did: the original SNK company before Playmore picked up the pieces, the arcade scene was starting to plummet, and capcom stopped making 2D fighters for a long time after Capcom Vs SNK 2.
Mind you, there seems to be a lot of 2D games coming out for the Wii and of course XBLA/PSN.
