Re: Games better on Genesis than SNES?
A lot of Genesis versions seem to have smoother gameplay (probably thanks to the extra processing muscle), which for me is more important than the minor graphical and sound advantage on the SNES versions, games like:
Battletoads & Double Dragon
Desert Strike
Earthworm Jim
Flashback
Jungle Strike
Out of This World
Soldiers of Fortune
I think that Flashback and Out of This World were also subject to some censorship in the SNES version.

You are correct on these counts.timewarpgamer wrote:A lot of Genesis versions seem to have smoother gameplay (probably thanks to the extra processing muscle), which for me is more important than the minor graphical and sound advantage on the SNES versions, games like:

In particular, the sports games were generally better because of the smoothness of the animation. The Video Game Critic recently did some reviews of the SNES Madden games and compared them to the Genesis ones (http://www.videogamecritic.net/snesmm.htm#Madden_%2793). While they generally had better graphics and sound, the soul of a sports game is gameplay. His review of NHL 94 mentions this as well.

Back when I owned both a Genesis and SNES, I would choose the Genesis version for just about any multi-platform game. They just had a certain smoothness to them that I preferred. Not to mention, I preferred the Genesis sound chip.

Yeah, plus according to my research, it said that Genesis makes pretty close to perfect ports of Amiga games, it is true, but IMO I like SNES port Flashback because of the sound.timewarpgamer wrote: Flashback

I don't know how come everyone loves the Genesis Aladdin more than the SNES'. Even my wife! To me, the SNES game is one of the all-time best 16-bit platformers! You don't have a sword so the majority of gameplay is based on acrobatic handstands off of people's heads. The controls were very innovative for the time and the animation was beautiful. Also, the graphics are still gorgeous.
I have to admit that I'm biased and judging from the comments, some people don't appreciate the SNES game but I think you owe it to yourself to have this game in your collection or at least play it!
Peace,
manaman

These two Aladdin games are not the same at all. Completely different companies; completely different games. I'd agree that the Genesis game was better (I did enjoy the SNES one as well, but just not as much), but it's really like comparing Mario to Sonic. Different games altogether.
In general, games on the Genesis were smoother due to blast processing*. The SNES had more colours available and also at once on screen. The sound chips were different. Street Fighter II, for example, sounds a bit too soft on the SNES (IMO), but more garbled on the Genesis. The colours on the SNES also seems more washed out more often than not. Street Fighter II really brings this out as well. It's less detailed but more vibrant on the Genesis, more detailed but a bit washed out on the SNES. I *think* I like the SNES SFII better, but it's fairly close IMO. I'll go with the PC Engine version.
*The processor in the Genesis runs twice as fast as the one in the SNES, hence "blast processing".
edit: Opps! I posted this before I realized this has already been addressed.

Alien 3. I enjoyed the heck out of it on the Genesis when I was a kid. When I played on the Snes a few years ago, I discovered that it was just terrible. Almost unplayable.

I actually prefer the SNES version in this case, but they're actually different games. It's not unplayable at all. It's pretty brutal, but not unplayable.redmachus wrote:Alien 3.
