I only did that a couple times Ack, and that is only to get around not using moslow since that would crash that p4 box for some reason. Now I have a proper Pentium 1 with Dos 6.1 installed. Besides that doesnt help the graphics card problem.

Software rendering will be an option either when you install the game or when you first run it.

why do they have their own folder in there with lots of data

That's probably the crack. Read the .nfo file--open it up in notepad.
