I think the N64 started something that the Game Cube perfected. Game Cube has the most comfortable controller in my opinion. Fits snug in the hands and the buttons, once you figure them out, which takes a while on any system, are perfectly placed. The N64 was good, but still a bit awkward even when I got used to it. I hold nothing against it, however, as I feel that they put it together as a test to see where game controllers were headed.
As far as retro goes, I think the SNES controller was the best. Just the right amount of buttons and laid out perfectly for the type of games it was used for. Plus no slices on the sides of my thumbs from the sharp buttons. I do love the feel of the NES pad, but just because it is so simple and lightweight and brings back so many memories that it makes me giggle.
Which console do you think has the best controller?
Re: Which console do you think has the best controller?
I'd hate to go with the flow, but yeah - Saturn controller. There's a reason all those Street Fighter controllers rip it off - the Saturn controller is just perfect for classic arcade games, and that's exactly why I love gaming.
If someone would ever make a Dual Shock controller with the Saturn's d-pad and six action buttons and two shoulders instead of four action and four shoulder, I think we'd have a clear winner. Perfect controller for the games of yesterday and today.

Yeah, that would be perfect.
Re: Which console do you think has the best controller?
i have to say the sony dualshock gets my vote. i just always felt it to be more solid than most. i do enjoy most of the others (gamecube, dreamcast, sega saturn model 2) i like the 64's controller despite some of the issues. my main problem with it lies in the joystick having a tendency to become loose after playing it for a couple years (its not that bad of an issue fortunately).

Voted for the Playstation series, specifically like the PS2 controller. When I pick it up, my thumbs go exactly where they are supposed to.
I dont like the 360 controller, the fact that the sticks arent symmetrical throws me off, the dpad is pretty unusable and I dont like the shoulder buttons.
As far as the Saturn controller, it is good, however we live in a 3D world, and it isnt even close to being sufficient for 3D games.

Re: Which console do you think has the best controller?
I had to go with the Xbox 360, but I really love the N64 controller. It just isn't any good for dual stick style shooters (for obvious reasons). Seriously, try to play Turok after using a modern controller. It's awful to control, no matter how great the game is. The game cube controller has a great feel, but I don't like how the A button just dominates it.

Re: Which console do you think has the best controller?
If they gave the 360 controller the d-pad off the snes it would be unbeatable.
Re: Which console do you think has the best controller?
I went with the SNES, since the D-pad on the SNES is better than the Saturn's D-pad in my opinion. Plus, I always felt the Saturn pad had a few too many buttons. In some games, like Virtual On or Mechwarrior, it helps, but frequently the extra buttons would end up either not being used or being unneeded shortcuts. Similarly the extra shoulder buttons on the PS1 were frequently underutilized. It wasn't until you saw the dual analog come into play that the four shoulders on the Playstation controller became an asset.

My vote goes to the six-button Genesis controller. That thing just fit my hands perfectly, all the buttons laid out like they should be, especially for fighting games (and Eternal Champions in particular, which got a lot of play by my young self).
As far as the Dual Shock goes, I remember there being a lot of complaining by people back when the PSX first came out, because people were weirded out by the controller design.
