DK64
Re: DK64
I enjoyed the game, but it doesn't feel like DKC for sure, it's separate from the group. Even though I liked it it doesn't surprise me when other people say they can't enjoy it.
Re: DK64
People needed a guide for DK64? I never had trouble finding stuff, or accomplishing anything. I just thought that the game was terribly designed.
The warp pads didn't remedy anything. They were an excuse to just toss more random junk around everywhere.
When Diddy Kong Racing first came out, I dominated at it. I was able to scoop up every banana on the course, and grab every balloon power-up I wanted. Drift around the appropriate turns...etc etc.
I go back now, and It really does feel like it's handling like junk...but it is possible to adapt to them.

Re: DK64
Maybe I'll give it another try at some point when I have more patience. But I really don't like the "wtf am I supposed to be doing" feeling when I'm playing a game. IMO, games should tell me what to do, and let me figure out how.
I also can't get over how technically inferior DK64 is to Banjo Kazooie. BK's made by the same company, does not require the expansion pak, and yet its graphics are just as good as DK's and the frame rate is better.

Re: DK64
I kind of felt the same way when I played Zelda: Link to the Past. I later found the manual in the huge stack that I have. The manual gave me a lot of hints/clues that I struggled with on my own. I wonder if DK64 is similar? I don't think I have a single manual for any of my 50+ N64 games with the exception of Mario Party 1. It's too bad that people weren't good about saving manuals.Hatta wrote:Maybe I'll give it another try at some point when I have more patience. Re: DK64
You're all out of your minds. DK64 is easily one of the best games on the N64; it follows the classic 3D platformer formula of collecting a bunch of items for completing tasks, and using said items to access new levels. Tons of good 3D platformers have it [Every 3D Mario platformer, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, etc.] I don't see any problem with it at all.
And what's with all this hate over Diddy Kong Racing? In my opinion, it's miles ahead [no pun intended] of Mario Kart 64. One the one hand, it has controls that actually work, and don't send you sliding off all the way to the level boundary, it has more vehicles, I think it has more tracks, a story mode, and boss races!

I understand that you are trying to defend the game...but over statements like this are not necessary.lisalover1 wrote:DK64 is easily one of the best games on the N64
The problem comes from the execution. Mario 64 handles like a dream, so many games afterward tried to mimic the way Mario handled in that game. Everyone in Donkey Kong 64 is klonkey. I normally say, "just learn to adapt", but it is far too unpleasant in Donkey Kong 64. The control style goes beyond providing a system to adapt to, to a flat out nuisance.lisalover1 wrote:it follows the classic 3D platformer formula[...]
When it comes to acquiring new skills, and items to access or complete new tasks, Donkey Kong 64 has an abundance. So many in fact, that every single level has several skills for you to find. Banjo-Kazooie had a few items for you to find, and everything was manageable, Donkey Kong 64, sends you into a rat race, constantly back tracking to get a different character, then finding a warp pad to warp back to another different character, then finding a new skill that is required to access another new area, back at the original warp pad that you found. Its not a challenge, its a wild goose chase within a rat race.
Re: DK64
I think most people felt that the controls didn't work. Maybe they're better if you're coming into the racing genre fresh, but if you're used to how Mario Kart handles (which most people were at the time) then coming to Diddy Kong Racing was just horrible.lisalover1 wrote:And what's with all this hate over Diddy Kong Racing? Re: DK64
The same can be said about sandbox games like GTA. Most people I know who played it had absolutely no idea what to do with a free-roaming world, and find it confusing, boring, and tedious to get around. Another thing: This game is NOT Donkey Kong Country; it was something new to the series. Also, almost everything in this thread that is based on opinion [even things I said], so none of us can really say if it's a "awful" game or not. It just appeals to different tastes.RemyC wrote:I understand that you are trying to defend the game...but over statements like this are not necessary.lisalover1 wrote:DK64 is easily one of the best games on the N64The problem comes from the execution. About the controls in DKR vs. MK64, it works the other way around, too. Both games just take some getting used to. Frankly, the control in both games isn't too good; but then again, this isn't Gran Turismo. We're not expecting a simulator, we're expecting fun. Of course the controls will be different than driving a real car.
Funny you should say that...RemyC wrote: I understand that you are trying to defend the game...but over statements like this are not necessary.
