Together Retro: Punch-Out (NES)
Re: Together Retro: Punch-Out (NES)
I played through this like a month ago for the first time since it was released back in the 80's. I went right through it. I got beat once by macho man, and took me 3 tries to get tyson. I guess it kinda helps I beat the game as kid but...dam it was too easy! (chalk it up to 20 years of video game experience I guess). The funny thing is I still remembered the pass code to go right to mike tyson almost 20 years later LOL.
Re: Together Retro: Punch-Out (NES)
I still find myself playing Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! a few times a year. I've been playing the game since it first came out, so the only real challenge for me is to beat Mike, which I still to this day can only beat by decision. It's a sold classic, with some of the most responsive controls in the NES library.

How's that possible?

In Animal Crossing for the Gamecube (Not Wii) you can find items that let you play old NES games like Excitebike and Punch-Out.

Or you can learn to code yr own passwords to get (most of) the NES games.

Re: Together Retro: Punch-Out (NES)
I have a confession. I stopped playing this days ago. That's very unlike me when it comes to Together Retro. Castlevania (as frustrating as it was), Monkey Island, Galaga... they all kept my attention. Don't get me wrong, Punch-Out!! is a hell of a lot of fun, but I guess what's killing me is the shitty saving.
Bare in mind, I am not using an emulator. So there are no save-states. I'm playing thru Animal Crossing, which means it's the original NES game as it was (well, after Mike Tyson was dropped anyway).
So I guess what's bothering me is that I can make it up to Mr. Sandman, but then he F's me up and I have to start all over again... Piston Honda, Soda Popinsky, Bald Bull, Don Flamenco. They're all actually pretty easy to me now, cuz I've fought them so many times. It's just I almost feel like it's a drag to have to refight them all over again when really I just wanna see if I can beat Sandman.
But I guess that's the way the game was meant to be. I'll probably go back to it in a couple of days. I jsut needed a breather. But if I see Fight Night Round 2 anywhere cheap, I'll mostly grab that and start playing the Super Punch-Out!!

You nailed it.
That's why Punch-Out!! Wii, was so easy for me (at least the first 12 fights). The opponents moves are burned into my brain. Keep it up, and you'll be knocking Sandman out in no time.

I swear, Sandman's Boo fakeout gets me every time. They did a great job of making him just plain intimidating.

Re: Together Retro: Punch-Out (NES)
Just played a round of the VC edition. A year ago, stranded in Canada with only a Wii... yeah, I played this game a lot.
Just played it for the first time in a long while... I was pretty surprised by how well I did. I didn't remember the King Hippo trick at first, but other than that, made it to Piston Honda (2nd) without getting knocked down once. Not too bad, but I've still never managed to beat the game. One day...

Re: Together Retro: Punch-Out (NES)
So tomorrow is the last day of June. Here's my final thoughts on this month's TR:
1. Punch-Out!! for NES fucking rules. But the curve is ridonk. Starts way easy. Then you run after yr trainer on a bike, then it gets sort of hard, then way too hard, then you get knocked out and have to start the semi-over again. But it's a great game. Never beat it. Ever. But will continue to play 20-something years later.
2. Super Punch-Out!! for NES looks great. But lacks the quality of the NES game. It's fun for a bit, and looks more like the arcade. But it's just not the thinking man's game that the NES game was.
