So it's pretty much settled, you're going for a Nintendo 64. If you ever feel the itch for a fighting game on that baby, let me know and I'll point you to the...well, to the four or so worth checking out.

Wait, there's a fighting game other than Smash Bros. on the N64?Ack wrote:If you ever feel the itch for a fighting game on that baby, let me know and I'll point you to the...well, to the four or so worth checking out.

Is Flying Dragon one of them? I actually really like that game, then again, I'm not anywhere close to being a seasoned fighter veteran.Ack wrote:So it's pretty much settled, you're going for a Nintendo 64. Oh--and as for my recommendation: Based on your preferences I do agree with many of the responses here. My main retro collections are the Saturn, N64 and NGPC. For my own tastes the Saturn is leagues above the N64 but there are some N64 games I just couldn't go without. They're both great systems.
If you do get an N64, make sure you check out the follow (granted some are a little on the expensive side):
Ogre Battle 64
Harvest Moon 64
Mario Tennis
Super Smash Bros.
Sin and Punishment
Mischief Makers
Paper Mario
Goemon's Great Adventure
Wave Race 64
Flying Dragon
Those are some of my personal favorites. Conker's is good too, of course. As are many of those mentioned here already.
Flying Dragon
Re: What should I get first?
Yeah, give me a minute.
American fighters worth checking out:
Super Smash Bros.
Killer Instinct Gold
Flying Dragon
Mortal Kombat 4
Import fighters worth checking out:
Rakuga Kids(PAL or NTSC-J...PAL is in English)
Hiryu no Ken Densetsu(NTSC-J, the sequel to Flying Dragon, focuses on the chibi mode with RPG aspects of the first game)
There are others, but I don't know if you'd really be interested in ClayFighter 63 1/3 or War Gods. There's only about 24 fighters on the console, and that includes imports.

Re: What should I get first?
What about Fighter's Destiny? I really enjoyed this game. It's much more tactics based than your average fighter and you get points for knock downs, technical hits, throw downs and straight K.Os. It's basically a fantasy fighting game based on olympic taekwondo style scoring system.

Re: What should I get first?
Yeah, it's well done for what it is, though if he's used to typical fighting games, Fighter's Destiny will likely throw him off for a bit. I'm not a big fan of point fighting in general, and the gameplay feels extremely stop-and-go. Also, it has some of the most uninspired stage design ever. It also has a sequel, the aptly named Fighter's Destiny 2.
