Game Play elements that should be buried

I don't mind too much busywork in rpgs because you're still getting experience... I guess when I get annoyed with fighting so many enemies I just take a break from playing for a day or so.

The Simpsons Game comes to mind when I think of overused gameplay elements... at least they made it fun.

A realistic replacement for exploding barrels. Why are there explosive barrels EVERYWHERE in so many FPS games?

Granted, they are fun to shoot, but come on, I don't think I've even seen ONE explosive barrel randomly in an alley anywhere ever. Sure, I've seen them down at propane stations etc. but on a side street or strewn throughout a dilapidated house? Come on!

Other than that, unskippable cut scenes drive me insane.
Systems: Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Genesis 3, Genesis 2, 32X, Sega CD (model 2), Saturn (model 1), Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox (Modded), Xbox 360, GameBoy, GBA SP, Game Gear, PSP... always adding more

I remember one of the PR people for Uncharted talking about explosive barrels in a very snarkish way - it was pretty hilarious.

Well, I just feel like hitting the attack button over and over again in any game is tedious, but in RPGs there usually isn't even any movement - if you have to fight through legions of random encounter cannon fodder, it's just "Press X, Press X, Press X, Repeat" for hours.

That's why Earthbound is awesome. Once the enemies become cannon fodder they insta-die and give you experience.

One thing I wish they would get rid of is fast travel. When I played Oblivion, the most fun I ever had was when I spent a couple of hours exploring the riverside, checking out the ruins, and fighting bandits when I was at low level. I ruined the game for myself when I got to a high level, turned the difficulty down and just started quest-busting. I stopped exploring the landscape and thus completely lost interest in what was actually going on in the game world.

Camera system that impedes game play a critical moments, how hard is it to create an intelligent camera system? All these generic shooters with the same invasion/fight to save humanity story, Is there honestly no better story concept that they can come up with? the lack of single player game play length in games today, it's seems like now they dedicated half if not more or of the development time in multiplayer and single player suffers from it with substandard AI, you're luck if you get 10-15 hours out of single player today and $60 per game you almost have to play the multiplayer just to to get all your money out of it. Companies using DLC as a way to add payed extra content that should have been in the in the game when you bought it. Games (LittleBigplanet, Prince Of Persia) with that controls that will work once but then when you try to do the same thing again it fails to do so even though you correctly enter the command. The physics in video games just suck and kmakes the games less enjoyable, like when you throw a grenades and it hits a rock and lands next to your feet and kills you.

I see someone played Doom 3, where it didn't matter where you chucked the grenade, it would explode in your face every time.

it's like that in every FPS i have ever played and as a physicist it just adds to my frustration.
I would love to see half these FPS junkies actually throw a grenade or shot a gun at a mobile target. The American military recruitment runs ads all over gaming media so there has some of them joining the Army thinking real combat is like Halo, i would love to be there just see how they react to boot camp training.

Most of the guys I've met in the military that like video games already knew the difference before they joined. Actually now that I think about it, all of the guys I've known that joined the military knew combat wasn't like Halo when they joined up, and they all played video games. Of course, I suppose it's a little different down here where a good deal of us own firearms and have been shooting many times before. But games that tend to be more realistic also tend to not be as popular. America's Army was probably the closest I've played to realistic, but you had to know what you were doing to effectively use a grenade, or especially a flashbang.

Of course, TFC had and still has my favorite grenades of all times. Use those suckers to jump and don't worry about the damage you might take off the frag grenades, you're probably gonna die anyway.

Resistance 2 has some killer grenades, the hedgehog is one of coolest grenade designs ever.
I find the throwing/targeting system to be the problem with them in a lot of games like in Gears Of Wars i could never use the grenades because of the system that you use was such a pain to get right during a middle of a fire fight.
