I am mainly looking for point and click adventures
but wondering what other cool things I can play out there maybe red alert, maybe phantasmagoria
if I have to give a time frame I guess 1994 and later...I do not think there something exciting in the 80's

If you're getting up a Win9x install you can pick up the Mechwarrior 2 games. They are a real bitch to try and get running on XP (and some versions won't work at all) and they are really fantastic games.

Command and Conquer 95 is also a pain to get working on XP, although I think there are ways of getting it to work, but its still annoying as... something.

I run Virtual PC on my computer for games that need DOS. Importing files to the thing is annoying if it isn't on CD, though.

EDIT: Oh god what a waste of an 800th post.

so running virtual PC is better than DosBox?
You can always rip the games to CD's right?

I still want to know
does windows have any graphical/performance advantages over DOS?

As far as I know, no as such - but there are some games which have Windows versions with improvements over the (older) DOS versions and there will be also cases where for some reason the DOS only version is better. In that sense is a bit case-by-case and not due to the limitations or advantages of DOS or Windows, but because the versions are just better done, or have some extras etc.

now that I think about it
I think its amazing that a command based operating system
can run full graphic games, while windows is a full GUI Operating System does not run them any better

Not really any more amazing than the fact that a machine without an operating system (say, any cartridge based game console) can run full graphical games. Windows 3.1 and 9x are really just graphical shells on top of DOS anyway.
