It definitely wasn't the most friendly game to new players. You really had to work to start making some money in that game. The loot you got from easy monsters was pretty trivial and you'd have to kill a lot of stuff to actually start accumulating anything. You really needed to work with a tradeskill if you wanted to start getting some money put together. Developing tradeskills was difficult in the early days though with the PK activity; my pack horse/llama was complete fodder, and there wasn't a whole lot of territory of to cover in guard zones.

Man, I remember UO. I became a roving warrior, found a nice skull helmet and war hammer, and joined a Chaos guild so I could carry their sweet shield. I worked up enough money to buy the biggest boat in the game, sailed off into the distant sunset, and quit playing the game. Fun times.

That's definitely the way the game plays out at first. When I first started UO it had first come out and was essentialy just Richard Garriott's social experiment. I remember being completely spellbound as I explored a massive graphical online world for the first time. The skill, economic and pvp systems were unforgiving but I was hooked. Nine years later I finally quit for various reasons, but UO largely defined my gaming life for a decade.

No other MMO has been able to capture the same feeling for me. I certainly hope one is able to in the future though.

The problem with a UO server is that you really need a decent amount of people in the shard for it to be worthwhile.

I'll agree that the population would have to be of a decent size to recreate all of the experiences, but depending on what you're looking for it I imagine it could still be fun to get a few adventurers together and go fight liches in Deceit or something similar.
