i'd say if you are living in the dorms... take nothing that you wouldn't want to get stolen. shit disappears quickly around people who are broke all the time.

This couldnt be more true. The one year I had an N64, it was in a closet (not hooked up because we usually played ps2 at the time) and one day I went to get it out, and the only thing in the crate was a Scoobey Doo game. Gone was the N64 system, 2 controllers, Mario 64, South Park, and Star Wars. I lived in a house with a bunch of friends, and never found out who took it. Seriously, a three bedroom house with 5 people and it disappeared like that. Luckily, at the time, it wasnt really valuable. I think I bought all of that stuff for about $40. Unfortunately so much time had passed between when I put it in the closet to when I went to get it out, I really had no idea when it was taken or any other details. I guess whoever took it thought I wouldnt miss it since it was in the closet. Obviously they werent looking to profit from their theft or they would have taken the ps2 and/or ps2 games, which actually had value at the time.

Moral of the story : Dont take anything dear to you or valuable.

I only took my Dreamcast with backups, Xbox with three games, and a healthy knowledge of emulation and some usb pads, to college at first, by my senior year I had my Saturn and Gamecube with me as well. I knew that if I took the Gamecube down at first I wouldnt get anything done. I was also lucky that nothing was stolen even though unsavory peopled lived down the hall and we lived in a motel like building (my sophomore year Ack actually lived across the way and I didnt know it until a year and a half later).

I would suggest the Dreamcast and backups as the only console, unless you have a current one you play often. There is plenty of fun you can get from games like Cannonspike, Third Strike, Power Stone 2, and Bangai-O, and if it all gets stolen you are only out $20-50 (depending on your accessories) and a bunch of CD-rs.

Edit:
And definitely bring your handhelds, I murdered my GBA in college. I beat twenty or thirty games in two years, then got my GP32 and decimated the NES RPG library). DS came out as I was graduating but if I had it and games like FFCC, Rune Factory, or even Pokemon, it would have changed what my friends did in the student union quite a bit - (more) videogames instead of D&D.

He's right, I brought my PS2, and it saw a lot more time my first year than any of my classes. I spent a solid month playing Silent Hill 3 over and over again. I suppose I should get back to it at some point and start doing speed runs again, I could beat it in about an hour and a half.

Honestly, I would not take any console that is too much fun. The more distractions you have, the harder it will be to do the work you need to do. At least, this is VERY true for me.

Here are some suggestions if you share that characteristic:

1. Take games that are fun multiplayer, but that won't be too tempting on single-player. That way, you'll have the system to play with friends when you want to be social, but it won't be that disastrous to your study time.

2. Consider not taking a television. It is a terrible distraction to your school work, and you can probably see all of the television you really want to see online. Also, your video games will really not be tempting, then. Your friends will likely have televisions, so you can still take your console over for group-gaming during your social events.

3. Stay out of your dorm room as much as possible. It is much easier to stay focused if you have a place you go to work. I suggest going to the library between classes and studying. Otherwise, you'll end up going back to your room and wasting time on the internet (like I'm doing right now) or something. That way, you'll be working during the boring hours of the day and won't feel as stressed when your friends want to go hang out in the evening.

4. Don't be afraid of 8:00 classes. They're valuable, just for the sake of getting your lazy butt out of bed. You've already managed twelve years of being at school before 8:00am. Having morning classes will motivate you to get out of bed and do something with your time rather than sleep half the day and goof off all night. Also, all of your friends will be asleep in the morning, so there are fewer distractions.

5. If you're really from New Orleans, pack your warmest clothes for Colorado. Also, get some vaseline for your lips and possibly your nose. The air is a lot drier in Colorado. This may just be me, but dry air makes my lips crack and irritates my nose. Don't keep the vaseline near your bed, though, unless you really want to be the subject of off-color jokes.

Damn - Limewater is better than a mother!

College is gonna suck, so don't expect to have any fun. I went to Purdue and it was absolutely horrible...

Obviously joking, youll love it.

Like others mentioned, bring one old school and one new school. For your old school, I would definitely say Dreamcast. You have 4 player action, downloadable games (so who cares if they get stolen), and emulation of NES! It will be a huge hit on your dorm floor, trust!

Your floor in your dorm will have some sort of orientation with your RA that everyone is supposed to attend. Blowing off all other freshman orientation is fine but I would probably go to your your first dorm floor meeting just to meet the other dudes on your floor and meet your RA so you can get an idea of what all you will be able to get away with. Most RAs (floor counselor or whatever it is at your school) are cool, but some got picked on in HS and are power-hungry dueshbags.

You might want to call your roommate-to-be and see what all they are bringing so you can plan accordingly. They may be bringing a 50 inch plasma reducing the need for you to bring a heavy-ass 29 inch CRT... or maybe you can share a mini-fridge.

Expect Marvel Vs Capcom to be a main attraction in your hall.

Another good tip is to write down the serial numbers of whatever system you take with you. If anything's ever stolen report it to the police, your local game stores, and your local pawn shops as they're all required to report all their serial numbers to the police each morning and must return it to you if they have it traded in.
