I like being "in the action". I have a 38" LCD and I like to sit 4-5 feet away with the speakers cranked. Atari 2600 Seaquest with the bass eq'd to almost clipping - sweet.

Depends on the size of the tv and the picture quality also. My 27inch wega I tend to sit fairly close to cause its small and my 60 inch tvs I sit about twice as far away. Closer you sit usually the worse the image also unless the screen is nice and sharp I have sets with both types of resolution so that is a factor also.

So do those things really make you blind if you stare too often or what?

As I get older have bigger tv but my sight is getting bad. Now that I have a 24" wide monitor I kinda keep sitting at the same distance when I had a 17" monitor.

It really depends on my gaming mood that day.
Sometimes I'm laid back on my couch across the room like 12 feet away. I set my receiver to 7channel stereo to get some sweet sound through the rear speakers. But I don't crank it. I do this with like RPGs and slow paced puzzle games where I'm just lazying about for the day.
Then sometimes I get into hardcore mode. I pull out my roommates bean bag, or this weird pink chair of LeeLee's and sit real close up to the big screen. I put on full surround sound and crank that shit real high. And I have a handy pile of empty mountain dew bottles to throw at people who bother me. I do this mostly when playing sh'mups and more fast paced games. i.e. Ikaruga, Lumines, Rez.
Then my last one is the good ol' standing only a few feet from the screen because I'm playing with some wired controller and I can't reach any chair. But I REALLY want to play. So I'm like indian style on the floor, or standing with my face against the screen. i.e. Guitar Hero or something. (I bought extension cables for my older consoles, thank GOD).

I have a 32 inch flat screen with surround sound. I tend to sit around 6 feet away from it on a chair in the middle of my room. I like to be close enough to see the details of the game, but far enough away to get the full effect of the surround sound.
