Re: The next resident evil...someone needs to takeover
Hasn't the "Resident Evil not being as survivor horror as everyone wants" topic been beaten to death already?
Re: The next resident evil...someone needs to takeover
It has been, we just had a topic about this a few weeks ago I believe. The funny thing is it's apparently not true due to sales figures although I think everyone can agree due to them not trying to do too much different and making the game to where it's best to play Co Op when there is a game like Gears of War 2 which destroys it in Co Op and being outclassed has hurt the current formula used and it's already kind of old.molotovwars wrote:Hasn't the "Resident Evil not being as survivor horror as everyone wants" topic been beaten to death already?
They should've tried to do a few more different things other than forcing people to play together imo.

Co-op should be optional not required. I like the idea of co-op.
They just need to keep it being an adventure game rather than an fps. THey have an opportunity now to start a new storyline since umbrella is dead and the last 2 games have been pretty much independent of anything else (it seems)
Its hard to make a game interesting that'll receive good reviews that doesnt simply go down to hack and slash. Tank controls are kind of frowned upon by the general public.

I think he was trying to say having a US developer trying to emulate japanese horror never turns out well. I don't think Silent Hill is getting old, it just really needs some new ideas and concepts from japanese developers. I look at Homecoming as a failed experiment. Can't hit'em all out of the park like SH3 did.Zork wrote:Could you explain this better? Why you think Homecoming is bad that is. One single game doesn't ruin a franchise either, it just deteriorates over time. Maybe this is more of a sign that Silent Hill is getting old anyway?holaback wrote:Just don't have it made by a US developer and everything will be fine. (Silent hill US team anyone? They ruined the franchise.

I don't consider Silent Hill to be strictly Japanese Horror and you shouldn't either. The game's themes and horror elements are derived from many different things but mostly western horror concepts unlike popular belief. Team Silent has been inspired by many western horror movies like The Shining, Jacob's Ladder and probably others I can't even think of, to books from many writers like Dean Koontz and Stephen King and more than that.corn619 wrote: I think he was trying to say having a US developer trying to emulate japanese horror never turns out well. Plus I don't think that Homecoming was a failed experiment, it was good game and if thats not what you mean sorry in advance. But this is a whole other discussion anyway but in my opinion the comparison is bad to begin with.
Comparing the way Resident Evil has changed in terms of design philosophy to Silent Hill is ridiculous because Silent Hill didn't change much at all in terms of philosophy, the US Team stuck pretty close to the traditional guns. All they really did was change combat up a bit and camera control.

Re: The next resident evil...someone needs to takeover
Zork, I agree aspects of Jap Horror was influenced by the west. But, since Silent Hill was developed in Japan I consider it japanese horror. Thats like calling a Toyota an american developed car. Those are japanese developed engines. Back to Silent Hill Origins came close, but I think Homecoming was missing that japanese twist. More specifically, the combat system in Homecoming was a experimental failure if you ask me. The evade move should enable you to evade since its required to survive the battles, but it doesn't most of the time. Creature design was uninspired and the inability to customize controls sucked. And I like my SH dark as much as the next guy but come on, that game is too dark to the point where I missed things like doors and items. Homecoming was outdated and Silent Hill needs some fresh ideas. Emulating old ideas like Double Helix did is not the way to evolve the series. I've seen lots of U.S remakes of japanese horror movies and I almost always enjoy the japanese version better. The U.S versions are good but some feel forced and over done. The Grudge is a great example. Ju-on was a better movie it had a smaller budget and the fear factor was much higher. Just a humble opinion from a longtime, hardcore Silent Hill and overall japanese and U.S horror fan. Resident Evil hasn't evolved either, there still using control concepts that are close to 5 years old. Its a action game now and left its survival horror roots a long time ago. I enjoyed RE4 but RE5 just wasn't fun at all.
