I got Eternal Darkness and i am damn excited to play it, cant wait...
I heard so much
speaking of horror movies, I really think there arent much good horror movies out there specially the past 10 years when everything just went commercial, like the first Saw was good, but to have sequels up to 5 , you cant convince me that is because of the great artist behind the movie.
Now days its all about gore which is gross not scary or a scared girl that sees ghosts. I think they deliberately make movies "mildly scary" so it can reach the vast majority of audience, capitalism again.
The other day I saw the Shinning , and although there wasn't much scary stuff in the movie and its slow with the action, it sure made you live a horrific atmosphere. It used to be better in the old days.
btw, does any one think that watch horror movies on VHS or older media makes them scarier, because the is old and not high tech so it gives that feeling of mystery to it, or am I just crazy?

Re: Scary Games
You're crazy. And the Arab world does its own thing with horror films. There's a Pakistani Dracula film, and don't forget Sayten, the Turkish Exorcist knock off. And capitalism has been in full effect the entire time, but good films were still being made. Instead, I assign it to Hollywood trying to keep the big box office draw while suffering from a lack of ideas.
And horror films have been all about gore since the end of the 1950s with the rise of Hammer. You want to learn about horror, watch a few of the Hammer flicks. And if you want some atmosphere, check out the work of Val Lewton in the 1940s: I Walked with a Zombie, Cat People, Leopard Man, and so on. Before that, we had the Universal monster films of the 1930s, complete with their over-saturation of the market. Before that, Germany really dominates the horror scene with such greats as Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and the Golem trilogy, though good luck finding that last one.
The genre evolves over time, and each region has a different spin, though they all effect each other. Right now we're seeing a lot of the Asian influence, though those are getting stale both here and in their home countries. Something new will come along soon, possibly Indian films. Bollywood keeps becoming more and more prevalent, so we'll have to see how that turns out.
And good horror flicks from your home country, Kingmohd? I'd be interested in checking them out.

Here's a good starter for anyone interested:Ack wrote:Nosferatu, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and the Golem trilogy, though good luck finding that last one.

As for the Golem Trilogy, you can't see 2/3 of it because it no longer exists.
PART 1 : Der Golem (1915) is a missing film. A post on IMDB suggests maybe 10 minutes exist somewhere in an archive in Germany. Oh well.
PART 2: Der Golem und die Tänzerin (1917)
Musical Comedy/ "Practical Joke" based on first film. Also presumed lost.
PART 3: "The Golem: How He Came Into the World" (1920)
Remake of original 1915 silent film. Classic.

It's good to see some horror fans on the site - it has been my favorite genre for a long time.
Re: Scary Games
Thanks! I knew Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari were free online, but I didn't realize The Golem: How He Came Into This World had been posted. I'm gonna have to take some time and watch it in the next few weeks.

I second everything you say here. The tub scene is the only moment in gaming that I actually jumped. The game kept me on edge the whole time, especially the knocking sounds. I was tense every time I zoomed in on a painting on the wall.Gamerforlife wrote:I think the only time a game ever genuinely scarred me was Eternal Darkness. That bath tub scene freaked me out and the insanity effects are especially creepy when you are back in the house after each chapter of the story.
Re: Scary Games
Doom 3 and Fatal Frame 2 were the only 'scary' games out of dozens that I have played. F.E.A.R. did have its moments but Doom 3 with its at-the-time-advanced-lighting-and-spooky-3D-sound did it all better. Nowadays all corridor tps/fps's are run of the mill boredom, including Dead Space.
As for Fatal Frame it did introduce a new gameplay gimmick that planted the fear of the invisible into the players' minds. Other survival horror games like the Silent Hills and Clock Towers just pump you up with dread and the occasional tension. Does Forbidden Siren offer any genuine scares?

Re: Scary Games
I would say sightjacking into one of the zombies and realizing he is about to see you constitutes as a real scare, though mostly the game is about paranoia and stealth.

So, how did we stumble our way into a course on German Expressionism?
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Turkey and Pakistan is NOT my homeland, they are not even connected to the Arab world.
Movie business is dead here, the only guys that do movies are Egyptians and they used to be good now they are just money making machines. TV soap operas are the things produced here, and anything comedy will probably work, but no movies really.
My home country once did a horror movie, although the movie sucked for sure, they were filming in a real haunted house, and ghosts interfered during the filming for real. I know most of you probably will say ghosts do not exist, but if they do not , then its a fun story to tell. If you believe in them, then its one scary movie.

I intentionally always lost my sanity, as there were no sanity effects that could kill or hurt you. So I'd make a point of getting my sanity to empty right at the start of each chapter.Gamerforlife wrote:I think Eternal Darkness would have been an even better game if they had made it harder to keep your sanity(magic made it too easy). I also sometimes wonder whether or not it was a good idea for them to break the fourth wall by having stuff happen to the player rather than the character. It made the insanity effects almost seem gimmicky and broke the immersion factor a bit
Personally, I enjoyed the fourth wall sanity effects, as they helped get me immersed into how the game is fucking with me. The first time it faked turning off, even though I knew it was one of the effects, I nearly messed my pants because I hadn't saved in a while. It probably didn't help that I was playing in the dark at the time.
