I think this is since Sony started selling the new PS2 bundle at $100/£99.99.

The DVD player update is 3.11A. So that is one way to check which 9000X version you have.

Beware! Sony has created a new BIOS in the SCPH-9000x series PS2 models that negate any OSDSYS update using the DVD player hack. This means that after BIOS revision 230, Playstation 2 units will not work with FMCB!

That's real bad news, guess sony is not letting their guard down one bit. So guys just buy some older ps2 versions and forget all the swapping!
