CD/DVD Media Life Expectancy and "Old" Games

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Actually, now that I think of it, I've had CD-R's succumb to rot. One began on the edge, then the whole aluminum layer began delaminating and peeling away from the plastic. It was an ugly site to behold.

The disc was about 6 years old and spent most of it's life in a car located in the midwest which no doubt accelerated the process.

The thing with CD-R's going bad isn't all that big of an issue, I keep all my backups on an internal HDD on my computer, I can always burn more.
Systems: Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Genesis 3, Genesis 2, 32X, Sega CD (model 2), Saturn (model 1), Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox (Modded), Xbox 360, GameBoy, GBA SP, Game Gear, PSP... always adding more

I was just merely posting a question to an issue I'd like to see some discussion on.

Who knows, maybe we'll see a new group of non-OEM consoles (like the Retro Duo, FC Twin etc.) that support 3DO (HA!), Saturn, PS1, Sega CD, and Turbo-Grafx CD (another HA!) software.

I doubt we ever see that happen, but it would be cool.

It makes me sad to know that one day my systems will die.
I think my Saturn will still give me another 10 good years of entertainment. Also, just noting, I make a personaly goal to not get emotionally attached to anything but a living thing, its hard to do, but you end up with a lot less disappointment when things get stolen, broken, or stop working properly.

The photo shop near where I used to live. Always made a big deal about how they had a license to press photo cd's, and vhs to dvd transfers on library of congress approved machines & that pressed cd's had a 300yr. lifespan, and dvd's had a 100yr. lifespan. I think I may still have one of their brochures lying around here somewhere.

Anyway, what I want to see happen hopefully is some kind of mod to be able to put a hard drive in a system select a game and start it up, It would be pretty simple with the right kind of programming skills to create a dummy disc drive that has a saturn 'disc' in it with hundreds of games on it. You probably could just take the saturn drive out and mount the hard dive in the space. How to go about making it happen would be the hard part.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

I'm hoping by then, we'll have more RetroDuo/NEX/etc. type devices for other retro systems. I'd kill for an affordable and durable PSX and/or Saturn clone that could play any region/backups without batting an eye.
dude, don't tease me with your sugar coated what-if's

Oh give me a fucking break, what do you know about anything? I don't have an emotional attachment to my consoles, I just like them and enjoy them and it's going to suck when they die.

You can't tell me you wouldn't be pissed/sad if something stopped working or got stolen. If you didn't LIKE it you wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

Hopefully something like this will see fruition. All we'd need is an electronic back up in some form or another.
