Who said Microsoft abandoned, as well? They individually code emulators for the 360 to play original Xbox titles. Sure, some of the oddball titles aren't on the list of backwards compatible games. But nearly every game that Joe Shmoe is going to walk into Gamestop and purchase is going to play on his new 360.

Ideally they would have near-full compatibility that the Wii has with the Gamecube, but I think this is a pretty good compromise.

personally I'm waiting for it to get a little cheaper. I want to ilink 2 fat ps2s. Maybe get the modem connector for them too and try to hook up some backups on the harddrive.

But right now the system refuses to die! I can't justify spending what it would cost to do this yet.

The reason that the Xbox and GC were considered abandoned was that as soon as the next gen hit all development immediately stopped for the previous gen. We have new PS2 games coming out two years after the PS3 launched.

Well, maybe the PS3 abandoned PS2 compatibility so that people would still buy the PS2. PS3s cost Sony money to produce, while PS2s are very likely pure profit at this point.

May not be the best idea in the world, but it could happen.

As to why people are buying PS2s? Well, it is possibly the best mainstream console since the Atari 2600. Why people still buy it, when I would think by this point everyone and their dog would have one, I dunno. It's likely that very few people are like I'd assume all of us are; when our PS2s get a disc read error, we take the sum-bitch apart and fiddle with it til it works. I'm sure when everybody else gets the error, they assume they can't fix it and spring for a new system.

Hmm... I'm getting an idea. Would $20 be about right to charge to fix the lay-person's disc read errors?

Did anyone mention PS2 is the best gaming system on the market, ever? I'm pretty sure you didn't. Well, it's the bet gaming system on the market, ever!

It's main appeal is the rather silly ammount of games avaliable (and still being made!). Genres like 2d fighters, shmup conversions and older RPGs flourish on the PS2 because the ammount of time/money/skill required to develop for PS3 (360 is easier if I understand it correctly) is so huge there's no point for smaller companies. As long as these companies instead release for PS2, people will buy the games. As long as people by the games for PS2, the developers can develop even more PS2-games. It's the perfect endless loop!

I am afraid to purchase a ps2
There so many games its endless, you can buy this one console
and never buy anything else for the rest of your life.

Yet i am thinking , if the ps3 had BC then I will only buy games that really turn attention.
If I had to buy ps2 , I think I will wait until it is on Underground gamer :P

Just too much money to spend
Still amazing these sales
I think Sony should add BC to top of the line ps3.

As for 360 , I was upset to know that it doesn't play pretty good games
like The Warriors and Beyond Good and Evil. I had to get an original for that.

Tip: Play The Warriors, it is one great game that no body knows about. I do not think you can get same experience any where else. You actually believe you are a gang members.

Nickfil, unless you are a diehard PS2 fan I would advise against waiting to Ilink. There are only a handful of games that support it and out of them GT3, Armored Core 3, and Timecrisis 2&3 are worth it. Unless people have figured out a way to network others through that connection.

Yeah- i wish there were more games for it, and it does seem like a waste... but i kind of love the time crisis series. I'm not a gta fan, and i've never played armored core.

This is why i'm waiting for the ps2 to get crazy cheap. It is hard to justify buying 2 of them for 2 light gun games, but i will pick those guys up when they drop to as low as the xbox or gamecube is right now.

I'm pretty sure if anything was added to the list, online consoles would have it

Who said anything about BC?

Sony still bankrolls games for the PS2 while Nintendo and MS dropped their previous systems like hot potatoes.

I could be wrong, but I thought the question was regarding the PS2 still selling, not backwards compatibility.
