Apart from the Half Life mod Wanted, it is the best Western FPS to date. Now if Red Dead Revolver was ever patched it may take that honor. But your right, it was a fairly little known game, especially for a Lucasarts title. I am shocked that I can still find gamers on it though and thought it was interesting enough to bring to the table.
I am astonished at how dedicated the UT99 crowd is. I mean they have made almost every map and game type from the future games in the series (UT99 Onslaught is just interesting), and they keep on trucking. I just wish ther was an easier way to grab lots of new maps than one at a time. I want another game that I have over 4 gigs of maps in (the other title is TFC and Ack can attest, we have played all of them atleast once, if not several times).
But to get back on topic:
Does the steam version require an EA id?
UT3 mega patched / Free til Sunday / $12 til March 15th

I don't even know what an EA id is... So no. (I have the retail edition, imported key to steam and am download black as we speak).

I need to remember to do this tonight after I get home from work. I got it when it launched and felt that the game itself was good, but finding a server kind of sucked. And people were really bad at Warfare, so it felt like my contribution was wasted.

I got this for around 9 bucks the other day on Gogamer 48 hour madness. I love it!
Warfare mode is fantastic. Attack the prime node!

So glad to see some fans here.

This might get me back into FPS mode which has been lying dormant for a long time in favor of massive amounts of RPGs.

I put in 3 and a half hours already. I played a bunch of campaign coop. Strangers just join on their own, as long as you run a public game (and forward port 7777 on your router. Most people don't do this, and that's why their servers cant be joined.) Campaign is a great way to learn the game.
I don't think anyone can bitch about the server browser or lack of video options anymore. Those were the main complaints and they've been fixed now. Those areas are as versatile, if not more, than the prior games.

So yeah, it's an ideal opportunity.

Having a hard time getting this update. It's only 1GB should take no time on my connection but it's been going for a day and I've only hit 24%...
Must be extremely popular right now.
I just hope it's not downloading the entire game again. I wish Steam gave better control over installed applications. Especially with retail games other than Valve games.
