Cheque is the correct spelling. If you say bank check to me I want to check the bank not think about a paper based monetary transaction.

Check is perfectly correct spelling in the U.S. just like theater not theatre and color not colour.
Anyway, as someone who has worked in retail plenty, I can say there are a lot of morons who still write checks. They don't seem to care that they hold up the line or have to pull out their ID or wait for the check processing machine or wait for me/the cashier to take down their DL number. When I'd get one of these people who insisted on paying with a check and there was nobody behind them I would waste as much time as possible to see if I could piss them off. I'd write ever piece of information on their license onto the check (height, hair color, date of birth). This usually didn't bother them though so I have come to the conclusion that people who write checks have no lives.
As far as using checks in non-retail situation I do sometimes. To pay my car insurance/payments and places where they might not take debit. Although even the dr and dentists take credit cards now.

I use credit cards for just about everything. On a typical day I only have about $8 on me and have little clue where my checkbook is.
But I always pay my CC balance in full every month. (and the Discover Cashback Bonus is nice!)

Just because you lot use it doesn't mean it's actually English.

I've written about two checks since I opened my bank account like 7 years ago. I still have the same starter checks from when I opened it; they wouldn't even accept them when I tried to use them at a store a while back. I either pay debit or credit on everything. Credit cards are a great tool if you are able to keep it paid off by the statement date.
