I find I have to do a lot more optimization with Steam games than GOG. Have I had to optimize GOG games before? Sure. But for the most part, older stuff runs. With Steam, I have had to fight with things quite a bit, and often times they fail to update older titles. In general now I trust GOG more than Steam. So I get extremely excited when it does well. Steam...not so much.dsheinem wrote:More definitive than what is on Steam?ExedExes wrote:They've now got the definitive versions of Doom I & II and Quake.
I always get a little surprised when GOG releases some of their "new" publisher back catalogs and everyone freaks out even though:
1) The games in question have been on Steam for years (often since launch)
2) The games in question have been super cheap in Steam sales for years
Is it really just the DRM-free hook that makes people go gaga? I couldn't imagine buying digital copies of id/Bethesda's catalog yet again...
This obviously doesn't apply to stuff like the SSI games and what not, but GOG has a long way to go to catch up to Steam for a lot of marquee franchsies...
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

Making progress on Duke Nukem Advance. Episode 2 (Egypt) is now clear, with an old school way to defeat the boss on that episode. Now the alien teleporter took me to Sydney, Australia, possibly a nod to the developer Torus. Yes, there is a theater in this level for you DN3D fans. But a new weapon too, the quad-barreled Lead Cannon shotgun. Such a satisfying feeling using this up close.
I also snapped up the Doom/Doom II/Quake bundle on GOG.

The almighty level designer is making a return to Ubisoft, needless to say I have chills up and down my spine.Stark wrote:Also: Clint Hocking.Xeogred wrote:This is what Far Cry 3 lacked.

Hey Ack, did you ever play Heretic or Hexen?

I beat Heretic years ago when I was a kid on PC and then moved on to Hexen in the late '90s. Played a lot of Hexen multiplayer on the N64 too.MrPopo wrote:Hey Ack, did you ever play Heretic or Hexen?

I played both of those too. Get them.
I'm on the final episode of Duke Nukem Advance now.

I'm finally getting around to The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. I'm enjoying it, though I feel like I have skipped out on some content. I'm now sitting in the mine area looking for some kind of kingpin who lives down there, and I have a tranquilizer gun.
I also gave Tower of Guns a spin over the weekend. I have unlocked around 22 items(including 3 mods), 5 guns, and 7 of the stat changes. I'm also consistently getting to the final boss of the Sanctum, the Gumball Machine, but I haven't yet figured out how to beat him. My last run I got close, but I unlocked the Seek mod for my gun, so I found it really tough to hit him because I had basically no control over where my bullets would go. Still, I really like this game.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
As you know, I just finished Riddick not too long ago, and I really liked it. A little stealth, a little platforming, and quite a bit of FPS. Good story and of course superb voice acting.
As of right now, I'm doing a double feature. I haven't played Doom II in a very long time, so I'm playing this on the laptop. But on the more powerful desktop, I had installed Rise of the Triad (2013), and it recently got a new update on GOG which has new features for when it's used on GOG Galaxy. My plan is to then play Doom 3 on the desktop and then classic ROTT here when I complete both of them.
BUT, I found a good deal over the weekend on Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood (PC) at the Goodwill store, so I may take a break to do that in between these double features. I see the reviews are very good for it!

awesome! I love that game. It's actually the next title on my Metagaming list, so I'll be firing it up again soon.TSTR wrote:Just finished the Office Complex in Half-Life. Some hairy maneuvering goin on there.
