Finally managed to sit through the last mission of Killzone 3. I like the game's clunky controls and cover system. Next will be moving onto the PS4 sequel, but am not expecting stellar storytelling from the first three games. Killzone 2 by far had the "best" story.

There's something about engaging those Helghast that never gets old. But too bad we'll never have a campaign with them as protagonists.

so in the Random Gaming Thoughts thread I was talking about playing through Metacritic's highest rated (PC) games when I'm between games. With that in mind I booted up Half-Life 2 last night for a while. I've been playing the same save for over 2 years now, haha. I'm about 10 hrs in now - just got to the part where you get a pack of antlions as 'pets' which was a pretty cool mechanic. I went from hating those things on the shore to loving them as they help me kill stuff.

I'm ducking out of my big list of PC FPS to play for a bit, because I found I've got a few more to add.

Instead, over on my Nintendo handheld thread, we've had a discussion about Duke Nukem Advance (GBA), and that is what I'm currently playing now. I'm liking the old school Doom style presentation and how well it looks and plays on the GBA. Already completed the first "episode" that culminated in an old-school Doom arena boss battle. If you can get this for under $20 I'd highly recommend it.

I thought it was funny that it took me playing it on 360 before I beat HL2. I bought it at launch on PC and something about it didn't suck me in. The Orange Box was such a good release ...

I actually love HL2.

Opposite you, I started it on 360 and got a few hours in. Then bought it on PC and got a few hours in. Then built a new PC, so restarted it again... but that save was started April 2013... basically I've just had HL2 as a game that when I'm not sure what to play I fire it up and play 30 mins or an hour - and totally love it. But then forget to pick it up again the next day and play something else. So it's taken me forever.

But with this recent idea of investigating the highest Metacritic-ranked PC games, I think I'll actually stand a chance of pushing through to the end once and for all.

I will say that HL & HL2 are easily 2 of my favorite single player FPS games ever. Probably my favorite favorite.

Yeah it's been doing that. I was talking id even before today. They've now got the definitive versions of Doom I & II and Quake.

More definitive than what is on Steam?

I always get a little surprised when GOG releases some of their "new" publisher back catalogs and everyone freaks out even though:

1) The games in question have been on Steam for years (often since launch)
2) The games in question have been super cheap in Steam sales for years

Is it really just the DRM-free hook that makes people go gaga? I couldn't imagine buying digital copies of id/Bethesda's catalog yet again...

This obviously doesn't apply to stuff like the SSI games and what not, but GOG has a long way to go to catch up to Steam for a lot of marquee franchsies...

Current rumor is that System Shock 1 is coming; Night Dive sent a C&D to the System Shock Portable guys that said they have all the System Shock rights now and that they'd be interested in linking to just the mods that Portable adds.

That's not what I meant. I meant that the first Doom is the Ultimate version with the bonus 4th episode and Doom II is Final Doom with its extra features, that were always available in those versions on Steam. It doesn't matter where you get it now, except now GOG is running that sale till next week.
