I respected my teachers in school very much, became friends with many of them later on after school. My pottery teacher ended up becoming one of my best friends in fact, He taught with style and pizzaz. I don't think any teacher should berate a student unless that student has flatly treated them poorly. I didn't appreciate being called ignorant which I followed with the staement that I made. I am much older know, 39 to be exact, and respect most anyone without fail nowadays, but like I said, I still feel I was right in that siutation. And DEEZ NUTS jokes are horrid :(

I don't think the argument should viewed in the context of whether or not that specific teacher deserved to be insulted, because they probably did, but rather that the insult implies all teachers fall under the old and very mean spirited canard of, "those who can't, teach."

There are plenty of awful teachers who teach because it's their job and it's what they have to do but there are plenty who teach because it's their passion. At different points in my life I considered going down this career path but I always felt like I'd fall into the first category so I'd end up being the kind of teacher I hated.

Also it's a zinger that was made by an at-the-time annoyed high-school student many years ago and we're overthinking it.

I don't know about you guys, but I come here to overthink irrelevant things and debate them pointlessly. Isn't that what an online forum is for?

Good point. 39 is probably pretty young for a panda.

Now I do want to give you guys some context about that paticular teacher that i made teh remark to. SHe was well known for berating her students, especially ones that she felt were poor at art. The class was an elective, and some took it for the credit, (but mostly for and easy grade I'm sure), she ruled with a wooden yardstick. I'm not saying that all of the kids were golden, but man, if you were gifted at art, she would put you on a pedestal and show you off and tell everyone, and I quote, "Why can't you other students create works of art such as Angela? You embarrass the art profession with some of the dribble you try to pass off as art"
But guess what? She was fired several years later for having relations with one of the female students who she thought was gifted. So yea, it was warranted what I said, I was defending all of the others she told would never become artists. One of the kids in my class went on to become an comic book artist and does quite well for himself.
Yes, I was an asshole back then, and prolly still am, but I respect others and their opinions and would welcome all of you into my home if you want to come over and play some gaems. :) You might get whipped at them by my daughter though as she is getting into arcade games something fierce now.

"Look how great Angela did" and "Be more like Angela" are totally different, but we've all had teachers and professors like them.

Two stories, different approaches:

In middle school they told you that in high school freshman get swirlies. In cA students would tell you that no matter what Professor McLeod will make you seem like an idiot in front of the class. Neither were true, but after my first group presentation he skewered my group mates. "Luke was the only one who got his ass from be the podium and engage people. You girls just stood there like you were reading from a teleprompter". He was rough on 'em.

My high school band director was rude as well. No joke, we were one of the best high school bands in the country, and even played at the Atlanta Olympics (and near where the explosive went off). When we would rehearse before a performance he would stop us mid-song point and say "Josh, on the trumpet! Do us all a favor and don't play! Pretend you're playing, but do not play during this performance!".

He would usually "cut" at least five musicians each performance. But at the same time we always got an exceptional rating, and we did have members who were pretty awful.

I love teachers. Very respectable and tough profession.

I was also a terrible student, for reasons I won't go into, for most of my academic career. I was kicked out of high school and college. Don't know what the hell I was thinking.
