I used to play games with a dude who was the world's worst about getting upset if he was losing. The most amusing thing to me is when we'd play a fighting game and I'd start winning, he'd blame the controller. So we'd swap controllers. Then he'd start to blame the game's programming and balance. Or say something ridiculous like "This game just hates me!" Finally he'd get so upset he'd swear he would never play the game again. Not once would he ever just admit I was better than him at whatever competitive game we were playing.
Yeah I don't play games with that dude anymore.

PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I used to play fighters against a buddy of mine. Mostly Street Fighter Alpha 3. We'd split our matches, he using Shin Akuma, me using Ken.
Fast forward a few years, and we decide to play Capcom vs. SNK 2. I absolutely destroyed him, actually perfecting the last round. He said we're never playing that game again. Thing is, I almost don't blame him, because I did something similar when we were playing some Tiger Woods golf. Every single shot, he'd get the heartbeat-style *thump-thump*, and just made ridiculous shots. About halfway through, I just threw up my hands and ceded the match.
Years later, he told me that was the best rounds he'd ever played. He's never done anything like that again.
Games can be quite fun competitively if you're playing against someone evenly matched, but honestly, it's not enjoyable if you're the one completely dominating or if you're the one getting destroyed. Now, the eventual outcome can be sweet, especially in a tournament setting, but the actual process isn't actually very enjoyable to me at that point.
I also know people that do not play competitively, or play to win. I know that's a strange notion to some of us, but some just don't care, they'll play to indulge people like us, or just goof around because they can. Some people (like me!) even hold back at times because they feel bad beating a certain individual. (I used to do this with my brother, but then he'd turn around and stomp me, so I eventually learned... no sympathy!)

I used to be pretty good at Soul Calibur back in the day and would beat the guys who played in regional tournaments. The amount of names I got called... Controllers got blamed quite often too. I still laugh about that.
It's no fun getting smashed unless you take the time to learn from it. I've had people kick my ass in games before, the most recent example of which I can think of being Mortal Kombat X. Previously I had quit games after getting handed my ass because it was demoralizing, but this time I decided instead to spend some time and learn from my mistakes and watch the folks playing as the controllers got passed around. My first match, a guy double-perfected me. An hour later I double-perfect him.
It also isn't fun being the guy who everyone loses to. Like I said, I was pretty good at Soul Calibur. I went to a party once where I was asked to play. 30 matches later, I was still holding the controller because I kept winning. I would try to walk away, and nobody would take the controller. A couple of times people would shout that they refused to let me go until they had beaten me. After 30 matches I announced I had to go to the bathroom and left. It just wasn't fun.

I am terrible at video games and never play them "competitively." I am at peace with this.

At the age of about 19 or so my friend and I would get legitimately pissed at each other over sports games. He literally threw me out of his house once, and another time things got so heated we had a pro-style wrestling match. Ridiculous looking back on it, but hey we were young and stupid.
One of his favorites quotes was when he'd get stuffed on a run play in football games he'd often look down at the controller and go "I SWEAR I didn't pick that play."

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I have similar times with my best friends. We get together every weekend to play ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 and ultra street fighter 4. So much salt gets thrown around
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I just got done with a friend's birthday party who wanted me to come over and play Street Fighter. I spent the entire time on the set, I eventually had to get up just to get something to eat. Only time I lost was when someone picked Omega Ken, because I've never played against that before, otherwise I always won, though often times it was close.
I don't even like Street Fighter 4. I actually out and out hate it. They were apparently happy to lose though, so I was willing to play.
I used to hold back against certain people, but these days the only way I can hold back is to pick a character I know nothing about. Even then, I'm gonna fight as hard as I can. I just think of it as, I wouldn't want anyone to hold back against me. I just find the idea insulting.

Eventually i will give SF command another go, im just tired of turning on a nintendo game and asking me to blow the mic or swipe several times on the touch pad or move around the console to point when i just want to sit and relax with a game. The 3ds has reduced that at least.

Yeah, that sounds like the time that I played against my cousin in Project Justice. I'd only played a smattering, and she had been playing a lot. I lost 18 straight matches. Until, of course, I found Hideo, who plays like a typical shoto. It allowed me to punish her ultra-aggressive style, and I proceeded to win 18 straight matches, at which point we called it a draw, because neither of us were having any fun at that point.Ack wrote:It's no fun getting smashed unless you take the time to learn from it. Best thing to do at that point is both of you have the computer randomize your character selections, and then just roll with what you get.Sarge wrote:at which point we called it a draw, because neither of us were having any fun at that point.
