But the comedy was new and refreshing.stickem wrote:Happy gilmore and billy madison are just as stupid as anything he's done since.
Plus Happy Gilmore had references to old video games, a really hot girl, a midget, a minority losing a hand, celebrity cameos, a plot a third grader could write...
Hmm.

But...but Airheads had White Zombie, and Steve Buscemi, and half the crew from Ghostbusters...

And Little Nickie...lets not go there.
So!
CHEF
Quick review that I doubt can be proven wrong... CHEF is MARVEL'S THE AVENGER'S with a couple of changes. The group does come together, there is an inner turmoil at first, family members hate each other, past struggles remain constant, and the cast contains Favreau, Downey Jr., and ScarJo.
Watch it and try to prove me wrong that this isn't Avenger's in a food truck. But shorter, and with better acting, and better writing. Better direction too if you aren't a fan of 100% framed shots. Plus the movie ends with "shut up. We're done here. Nothing more to see.".
So in short, a leader assembles by chance and by hope a rag-tag group to relive his glory days and to do it to his best and help his fellow man.
Plus hot women.
Assemble!

yes it was...but we got older and he still played the same role. but i still like his crew and movies. i can't understand all the hate for grownups. it was what i thought it was going to be. i like all the actors in it and it was a good buddy flick. maybe he does play the same role for the last 20 years, but i still enjoy all his movies, mindless comedy, and that's good enough for me when i'm bored on a weekend looking for 90 minutes to waste.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Adam Sandler is a crime against humour. He's not meta-comedy, or even parody of comedy. He's just Goddamn awful. Most contemporary comedy is awful, lowers the bar for everything and everyone involved.

SOUTHPAW
If you like movies focused on boxing, see SOUTHPAW. If you like boxing cliches see SOUTHPAW. If you are a fan of the male physique, see SOUTHPAW. If you love a good story, skip SOUTHPAW.
The boxing scenes in SOUTHPAW are groundbreaking in the way they are shot, the intensity they provide, and boxing accuracy. No doubt that people are actually boxing and trading jabs, uppercuts, and combinations.
The boxing scenes in Rocky (all of them) consist of Sly wobbling around, throwing punches that obviously don't connect, and are more of a montage than a fight. Well, I'll give the street fight in ROCKY V a pass because it is a street fight. But it's not the fight we care about in the Rocky franchise, as we care about the people in the movie. Not just Rocky...everyone. We even care about Apollo Creed's wife. Every character has a story, every character faces some sort of turmoil, and at times we even root for the antagonist. In short, we "know" these characters. We "care" for them.
Not so much in SOUTHPAW. I would compare it to BLOODSPORT as both feature Forest Whitaker and incredibly exciting fight scenes, but BLOODSPORT knows it's a goofy movie, where SOUTHPAW takes itself way too seriously.
You don't get to know the characters in SOUTHPAW. Not to spoil anything, but there is a cliffhanger in the first act of the movie that just kind of disappears. It's never brought back up, which is mega disappointing. There are many variations of the saying, but "if a gun is drawn, someone better shoot". In SOUTHPAW, guns are constantly drawn and no one shoots.
This film is very much style over substance, which I'm not saying is always bad, but in this case it didn't work for me. I also definitely see the appeal of the movie, as with the Fast & Furious franchise, as this is a great movie for teenage boys who seek an adrenaline rush and for teenage girls who like hunks.
Given Jake's training, performance, and straight up spelunking into method acting, I'm sure he's not as happy as he wished with the BO numbers. He provides a top notch performance when given little to work with. And what doesn't make sense to me is that the head writer of the film is Kurt Sutter, who was head writer of Sons of Anarchy, which was a show driven by character development (and men's butts). The co-writer scripted THE MECHANIC, an incredible film focused on method acting and character development. So odd that the characters in SOUTHPAW seem so empty.
It's an okay film that should have been a great film. Not bad, but it always is disappointing when a movie has so much talent and potential and falls in the category of being average.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Ehhhh. I thought Genisys was just fine.
I understand some of the gripes, but I've felt that Hollywood has had a dearth of good writers for a long time. But I enjoy my popcorn flicks quite a bit. Action movies have rarely gotten much respect from "proper" film critics, anyway. Especially those that are boosters for the independent film scene.
I also suspect that there's a little bit of brain drain, or at least a sharpening of resources when it comes to film and television. A lot of the longer-form, more thought-provoking writing seems to occur with TV series these days. In some ways, that leaves Hollywood with a quandary, because if people are sating their needs for something more heady, then it stands to reason that the gap they can fill that really can't be done on TV is the massive summer blockbuster. And these films definitely make money overall. At least the Marvel cinematic universe does... and I don't have nearly the gripes about that as he seems to have.
Speaking of the Marvel movies, I went and saw Ant-Man. I was expecting it to not be good, much like my opinion of Guardians of the Galaxy before I'd seen it. But my Dad and brother went to see it, had really positive things to say, so I caught it the following weekend. It was surprisingly good! I like that they made it a heist movie more than anything, and I also think there were quite a few genuinely funny moments in there. It didn't take itself too seriously, and there's something to be said for that.
Anyway, I'm no film critic, so take with a grain of salt.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
SOMM
A documentary about spoiled cunts so arrogant, even I couldn't stomach it. It's about douche bags who want to be a master sommelier, aka someone who pairs wine with food while also being a wine critic. They're basically rich bull shit artists that would rather not work but get paid to drink wine all day.
I know the complexity of creating a decent wine as I have a friends who own a vineyards, but Christ if this movie doesn't make you want to jump through the screen and choke the "stars". It's grapes dudes. Yet we get "I taste hints of watermelon rind, nectarine skin, a hint of Summer and Winter, blended with a water that reminds me of lake Superior".
Dude. You are drinking wine, not a fruit salad on vacation.
If you have a thirst for the obnoxious, see SOMM.
Second up...
IN THE BIRGES
Two stinkers in one night.
It did have a few funny moments, but as a whole this movie is better left to stay in a hole.
The most entertaining things about this movie are Colin's eyebrows, which at times you expect to jump off his face.
Alright! Back to the drawing board as these two were clunkers. And SOMM could have been excellent if they painted the sommeliers as the jerks they are, rather than praising them. You could have had humor, in-jokes, callbacks...but no.
