As I'm sure some of you already know, Mr. Sharif is no longer with us. He could have left a bigger mark had he managed his career better, but what he did was more than enough to be immortalised in film.

Went and saw Terminator Genisys yesterday. As a film in the series I think it's not as good as 1 and 2, but it edges out 3, and handily beats 4. I did not care for Emilia Clarke's acting, but the rest of the cast did great, especially Arnold. You've got your usual Terminator plot holes but that's to be expected with any film that makes time travel a central element. I did enjoy the twist the film made out of John Connor, and the new T-5000 and T-3000 were cool ideas for terminators. The cautionary tale about having every device connected and a clandestine malevolent OS I thought was as prudent a point as ever. Special effects overall were pretty good, especially the rendering of Arnold's younger self. Combat was above par, but a lot of the one liner punchlines fell flat in the audience I sat with. Ultimately I enjoyed the film, but then again I'm a pretty big fan of the series so there's some bias for sure.

If you removed all the one-liners, Arnold trying to smile, and callbacks to the earlier films...how would you rate the humor?

I believe if you removed all of those elements, the film would be without humorous elements at all.

I see nothing wrong with movies that are love letters to their predecessors. But when they can't stand on their own feet and be their own thing, that's when I get disappointed.

T3 gets a lot of guff because it really isn't that good, but it did what it set out to. And even if you hadn't watched T2, the scene where Arnold puts on a gay dude's glasses would still be hilarious. The fact that I had watched T2 made that scene even more hilarious, but the joke didn't rely on the fact I saw T2.

Too much of Genysis seems like the writers think you've already watched all of the previous films. The smiling gag was funny the first time, but they wore out that sucker. Not that Genysis is as bad as the last Die Hard (two hours of explosions and people falling) and it does have it's moments, but I know that some fan-fiction writers could have written a cleverer script.

I'm guessing you meant "stand on their own feet" in relation to the comedic elements of the film. I agree, Genisys' comedic elements are a lame duck.

However, I didn't go to see this movie for comedy. I went to see it for hard hitting futuristic killer robot action, along with head scratching time paradoxes. And it delivered those two things with gusto.

That's exactly what I meant.

Every Terminator movie is different, and they should be. I should never expect another T2, just like I should never expect another good album from Guns n roses. All the trailers leading up to Genysis made it seem like they were going for another T2. Never try to replicate perfection.

Even with some pretty silly cgi, T2 is still awesome with bits that will crack you up, action that will get your heart racing, and when Arnold gives the thumbs up....oh man. I saw grown men crying in the theater.

T2 set the bar too damned high.

When the T-800 in Genisys says "Take care of my Sarah." at that one part towards the end of the film... I admit it made me get a little misty.

I've been watching lots of movies the past few weeks, but haven't felt much desire to talk about them because they were nearly all classics or MST3K episodes. I just don't feel I would have much to add to that.

But then last night I sat down and watched this wonderful piece of garbage:

Image

Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

This movie is pretty awful. I'd say it's the second worst Sylvester Stallone movie I have ever watched, but then I absolutely loathe Rocky V. SOMMWS is slightly more watchable, but it's still a terrible movie, with painful jokes, awful delivery, and moments that felt humiliating to watch. Never in my life did I think I would hear Stallone sound like an upset child, but his constant, "But Mom!" whines came off like an upset 10 year old who doesn't want to do chores. And Estelle Getty's character comes off as frustratingly annoying, naive, and ignorant. She never approaches likable for me. This movie is so bad, Stallone actually says the title of the movie halfway through as a joke. He doesn't sound like he wants to say it...but he says it.

This is the plot:

"Sylvester Stallone is a cop on the edge, patrolling the hard streets of Los Angeles and taking down the bad guys one at a time. But then his mom comes to visit. When she witnesses a murder while buying an illegal submachine gun, this cop's mom becomes her son's new partner to take down a group of villains so heinous, they committed insurance fraud."

I admit that I laughed a few times while watching this, but it was more at the movie for existing than for it ever being actually funny. The after school special smile that Stallone gives Getty just after running down and busting a murderer who had executed his own mother at the end of the film pretty much sums up everything you need to know about this movie. I've seen mozzarella sticks with less cheese.

This was part of a major misstep in Stallone's career in the early '90s, though he recovered the following year with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man. Looking back at his filmography, I realize that while I prefer Schwarzenegger, I think Sly is the more interesting actor, and the better overall artist by far.

And this is still better than Rocky V.
