Good gaming podcasts

Post by Mega-Dan »

What is a good gaming podcast besides Gamespot podcasts? I am looking for more obscure ones.

I used to listen to these guys, as a way of keeping up to date with the worst breed of casual gamer; the drunken madden player. Every single week they would just talk about whatever sports game came out that week, how gay Nintendo is, how drunk they got the night before, how gay Nintendo is, past girlfriends, how gay Nintendo is, and how Nintendo fans are all virgins. I think that about sums it up.

I should really catch up though, and see how the poor bastards are handling the success of the Wii, after chanting it's doom for the past 2 years...bahaha.

There aren't a whole lot to be honest.
I've given a number of them a try.
I'm a bit harder to please since I have pretty specific tastes (more retro obviously)

These guys were pretty good...

For all things Nintendo, 4CR is great, but I unsubscribed from their feed since they strayed from their good format (not sure if they came back)

If you have a DS, these guys are ok:

They ramble a lot, so you they can get tiring if you are looking for somebody to get to the point

Destructoid's isn't one. That's for sure. (Just listened for the first time.)

Well, I actually dumped all the ones I used to listen to.
4CR got off course a while back and l never came back.
The others rambling just got on my nerves.

Lately, I've been listening to
Game Theory Podcast
http://gametheoryshow.com/
They cover a lot of the business side of gaming and such -- I find it interesting

I second the 1UP Yours podcast. It is fantastic. I haven't missed a single week in over a year and a half of listening. They cover EVERYthing, but it's not especially retro.

If you want a good retro podcast, I find the best one to be another 1up podcast called Retronauts. You can subscribe on iTunes or get it straight from 1up.com. Jeremy Parish is the host and his tastes are very much in line with the hardcore retro faithful. Every week they go over the newest retro releases for VC, XBLA and PSN, plus compilations. They also do a segment called "Virtual Selection" in which they name a game they'd like to see released on download services. But each show has a main theme, and their past topics have included a whole show about music (I'd recommend hunting that episode down), the Neo Geo, adventure games, etc. Chris Kohler from Wired.com is also on that show, even though he doesn't work for 1up. They even have a kick-ass sounding retro theme song one of their listeners composed. Anyway, as you can tell, I like this show.

I don't really listen to any IGN podcasts but I've recently started listening to their new 360-centered show called Three Red Lights (love the name) and find it to be really good. As someone who's new to the 360, it's a pretty cool show. They also keep the rambling to a real minimum. 1UP Yours and Retronauts can at time go off on tangents, but they are generally really good about bringing it back home.

Thanks for the tip about the Game Theory cast, Racket. I'm really fascinated by the biz of the industry and so I will definitely be checking that one out. The question is whether I'll have time to add it my podcast listening schedule!

Frankly, many of the articles, reviews, etc. that I read on more popular websites like IGN, Gamepot, etc are pretty stupid so I wouldn't even bother with a podcast from any of those mainstream sites. I'm actually surprised that 1up has a retro podcast as those sites seem mostly run by noobish, Playstation era gamers.

Maybe Racketboy needs its own podcast
:D
