That's fine, I'm just surprised. Like you I always listed LttP among my favorites, and as a kid I was thrilled to discover SoM because it was like I had finally found another similar game.
That's odd because I had the same conclusion about Sword of Mana when I'd gotten it when I was younger(my dad had gotten me a LttP cart long before then on gba) and it jsut seemed way too similar. Hate that the original Sword of Mana cart was a victim of the lost carts to never be found but at least I have FFA now(which that ought to be on my summer games list but there's more important games and one that I will buy next month)

Going to go ahead and get a jumpstart on my summer challenge and start up lunar because darn it, I miss that game and don't know why i stopped...(may've been work related busyness and just didn't get around to it and the rearrangement of my room. which i still need to clean up all the wires and possibly get command strips or something like it to put the surge on the wall for easy access). Since it's been as long as it has I'm going to start over and remember to grind this time, I think that was one thing that bugged me about that section. I recall making it to the wizard town but not much farther for some odd reason...

I'm also playing Pokemon Ranger(says it's a action rpg so I think it counts for this thread instead of the other). I love the story in this one(even if it's majorly watered down to make the obvious even more obvious about the story...some of it I figure out due to exploring long before Go Rock does a stupid "Yeah we did it, what You going to do about it?" and "Here's our plans good luck stopping us!!!!"), the only bad part about it is I keep running into moments of having issues with the Go Rock encounters. I know what to do and everything but the stronger pokemon out of it, or heck if it's one's like geodude i can't seem to do the right assists to get them inmobbile enough to get a capture without them breaking or attacking the line...lunar sounds a little more enjoyable at this point...

It's the girlfriend's fault. She'd been reading about EB/Mother series and wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

I will jump back on SoM this weekend

Fudge this, after that post I had a ureka moment, used my partner then a fighting assist and caught both in one fell swoop. I know water and such is good against grass so I wonder if the guy is still with geodude's on the other path and as such if I could get it this time...

I know, but in ranger sometimes that does absolutely nothing(at least on the more evolved pokemon). It feels like some of these are a game of chance and also a game of if you see a fighting pokemon grab it!!!!!! (those make the battles a little easier if somehow you can disable the pokemon long enough to use the fighting to speed it up...)

As a guy who keeps complaining about combat in roleplaying games, I might be doing the unthinkable: I'm playing a Wizardry game! Wizardry 8 to be exact and I'm liking it very much.

The thing is, most roleplaying games, really have two options: Heal and attack. Magic and summons are just bigger attacks and running away stopped being part of the strategy once JRPGs hit their stride. So combat is boring and mostly a matter of having bigger numbers than the enemy.

Not so in Wizardry 8, here you have a lot of options in combat: You can put enemies to sleep, but they wake up if you hit them so it may be better to paralyze the strongest one. There are buffs, and blessings, and different types of offensive magic....lots of interlocking, strategical options that are better than just attacking. And they are all necessary even when you fight thieves and bats, there's no battle in which you don't have to plan a little bit. Spells are limited too and you have to conserve them, there's no easy way out in most cases.

So yeah, really enjoying it so far. Except for the part I was ganged up by 10 thieves and my party was brutally murdered. I was warned, I just didn't listen

Western RPGs are pretty good about making status effects worth using. The general balance of western RPGs is that all enemies are dangerous, while in JRPGs they go for a model of trash mobs not being very dangerous but slowly wearing down your resources. When the trash doesn't hurt very much it's not worth wasting time with the status effects, but when you face a large party of guys who can two-shot you then status magic is awesome.

Finished Pillars of Eternity a few weeks ago, and now I'm playing a similar isometric fantasy RPG developed by myself (currently in alpha; see my other thread in the Creative Corner as I'm not sure it would be allowed to post info about own games in the current subforum).
