I'm going to leave this here, and in a few years' time we'll have a better picture of where things will have gone right/wrong.

I read this today too, and really enjoyed it. I'm still on the fence about Oculus/etc, but it's nonetheless an interesting read.

It's a good leap forward. Imagine 10 years from now, it has a lot of potential.

Frankly the potential to benefit humanity is greater than that for gaming, ie in the fields of training, therapy, remote conferencing VR has loads of great potential uses.

And flying/driving inside cockpits would be cool too

here's something I hadn't really considered until it was mentioned in passing on Idle Thumbs... It seems like a lot of different hardware makers are aiming to release their own version of VR. The Rift and The Vive being the two we're hearing most about, but there are others including one made by Razer, MS's Hololens, and many others with names I can't be bothered to remember from companies big and small.

Now Starbreeze has announced their own StarVR (http://venturebeat.com/2015/06/18/i-was ... xperience/) and have been showing off the tech via a Walking Dead game that they're working on.

The part that concerns me is the idea of hardware exclusives. If gamers get excited about a VR game - let's say this Walking Dead one for instance - they might be thinking "ok, well I'm gonna get a VR headset." But if Walking Dead only works on StarVR and another game only works on Vive and another only works on the Rift and so on... well now you've got a real choice to make.

To put it another way, if all the VR headsets were just an accessory that granted you access to all VR games then I think it has a much better chance of catching on than if you have to decide which of these multi-hundred-dollar accessories to buy knowing that you'll still not have access to some of the VR games you might be interested in.

I agree with that RPS article. Like 3D, I think that VR will probably end up being just an expensive gimmick for gaming purposes. The potential for other applications is huge, however.
