Then a few years passed and the Wii U came out. Isn't that the same thing that's going on right now? Only difference is the number of Wii Us sold is causing people to think that Nintendo is going to abandoned the console. They would never do that.

Unlike the Wii not being HD, there's nothing wrong with the Wii U. Sales are poor, but abandoning it and releasing a new console early is not going to magically fix console sales. Think about it... What sense does that make?

Their E3 announcing left something to be desired, but that's only because we have already known about their biggest upcoming releases for a while now (Mario Maker, Star Fox, and Yoshi's Woolly World). But, a few things. One, what Popo said. Two, everyone is complaining "The Wii U is doing bad" and up until the end of last year you couldn't stop hearing "There's no games on the console!!!!" No wonder Nintendo is giving us news about upcoming games earlier than E3.

Three, no mention of the upcoming Zelda U game. IIRC, it was said to have a 2016 release. So we know that Nintendo plans to release a game for the Wii U next year, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that they're releasing more than 1 game for their console. The Twilight Princess GCN/Wii argument makes no sense to me. There's this. Also, the game makes use of the Gamepad. Twilight Princess was able to have the motion controls "tacked on". How will Zelda U be able to work on a new console without the Gamepad? Unless the new console also has a Gamepad style controller, at which case, what would be the point of releasing such a console and abandoning the U so soon?
Fair points, but when I say they are "abandoning ship" I simply mean they are scaling back development and probably putting most of their big guns on NX stuff. I know they will release some stuff on the Wii U in the future, but I think it's going to be sparse.

They're very aware that a huge part of what killed the Wii U was marketing and a complete and utter lack of games for what seemed like an eternity (I'd argue PS4 has been even worse in the games drought department, but it has raw horsepower). If they focus their big guns on the next console and make sure it launches with several killer apps, they probably feel like it could make a big difference in sales.

I dunno, could be wrong obviously, but they could have shown off all the stuff we already knew about on the show floor and the press would have covered it fine. The moment they knew everybody was watching and hoping for new stuff, they announced nothing.

On the Zelda thing, I just said it wouldn't surprise me, not that it will definitely happen. I don't think your argument about the gamepad is necessarily a dealbreaker as :

1. Nintendo's next console could have a modified/rethought gamepad to maintain backwards compatibility with Wii/Wii U games and...

2. They could always pull the gamepad features out at this stage in the dev cycle. The game isn't completely dependent on them.

Finally, imagine if the Wii U would have LAUNCHED with Mario Maker instead of NSMBU. I think the outlook would be a lot different. *sigh*

Also - don't read this as a "Nintendo is doomed" prophecy. I don't believe that. Nintendo is a giant and will survive forever.

At the end of the day isn't the only thing that matters is what you can play on a system?

If the library available is for you: awesome, if it isn't: that's fine. But worrying about obsolescence is absolutely ridiculous. Being upset something isn't specifically catered to you is even more ridiculous than that.
If Nintendo has teams that are focusing on NX (and they do, obviously they probably have for a couple years) they are probably teams that have already produced titles for Wii U. Chances are Nintendo learned from the Wii U launch about the development cycle time for the games and they want more titles available at launch.

Granted, if a classic style 3D Mario isn't coming out for Wii U, I'll be disappointed ... but that doesn't invalidate my Wii U purchase. I don't even own all the Wii U games that I want to play that are already out, let alone whatever comes out prior to NX's launch.

Is Zelda Wii U being pushed to NX? I don't think so. I think it's coming out much sooner than people realize. And I think the NX is coming out a bit later than people realize. Twilight Princess was an anomaly, not presidence. It was only moved to Wii because it could be played differently.

NX feels like it's the first time Nintendo's started talking new hardware and people have collectively been pissed off. It's not the earliest they've spoken about new hardware. To top it off, they haven't actually talked about it, they've just said it exists and that they'll detail it in 2016.

No one mentioned "Fast Racing Neo" in this thread or the E3 thread? I'm kinda surprised...

What exactly is this!? It's like Nintendo said, "No, we're NOT making a new F-Zero game. Oh, you wont shut up about it? OK, we'll let someone else make it... but they can't call it F-Zero." Is that basically what this is?

No, they made a different thread about it.

Looks more like Wipeout to me though.

I'm pretty disappointed in the Nintendo presentation at E3. Relatively little new content shown, and what was new didn't appeal to me at all.

That said, I'm still pretty happy with my Wii U and there are a handful of games coming soon that I'll enjoy on it. Fatal Frame, Xenoblade, Mario Maker, and Star Fox all look great this year. After that... well, I've got a decent enough library of games that I'm happy if the console peters out at this point.

Nintendo themselves have said they don't really care about E3 (not their exact words, but what I surmise). They Nintendo Direct anything important, which is why we already knew about their big announcements at E3. And they said that they only care to announce things at E3 that are coming in the immediate future, which is why there was no Zelda U talk.

If you think about it, Square must have been working on the FF7 remake for at least as long as we've known about Star Fox Zero or Super Mario Maker. It's just that Nintendo didn't wait till E3 to tell us. Picture that Muppet nonsense if we knew nothing about a new Star Fox game. Everyone would have been like, "What? They're turning into bunnies? Wait... that looks familiar... MOTHERFUCKINGSTARFOX!?!?!?!!?!?" It still would have been in the shadow of Shenmue 3 and FF7 HD, but at least no one could say Nintendo's E3 was a bore and there's nothing interesting.

Still, I too was a little disappointed that there wasn't one or two mind blowing announcements. But maybe one or two Nintendo Directs from now there will be some huge game revealed. That's just Nintendo's style, like it or not.

It's great. I played through it immediately after openign my WiiU, and I didnt' stop uintil I had 100%. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

EDIT: Also, you should try co-oping a few levels with your daughter!
Yeah I'm just messing around with it right now. Gonna play a few levels with my munchkin from time to time. Eventually I'll put in a real effort to play it start to finish. I 100%'ed New Super Mario Bros. Wii, maybe I can do the same here.

Ziggy587, I agree.

I think if you consider everything they announced at E3
, it's not as unsatisfying. It just wasn't all included in the Digital Event. They showed Earthbound Beginnings (and then released it), Ryu and Roy being released for smash, and bringing Fatal Frame 5 over this year. If you also imagine the situation if Star Fox wasn't mentioned last year at all ... and the only real difference would be people's hype level (Shenmue 3 withstanding). The actual slate of titles haven't changed one bit.

I'm not sure what to say if people need things announced in shocking ways. That's kind of disheartening.
I was a little disappointed as well, but that's mostly because I got set up.
My E3 experience went from Mother 1 and seeing Ryu, Akira, Jackie, and Heihachi in Smash Bros to seeing Super Mario Maker really kicking ass and then seeing Doom for the first time and some in depth Fallout 4. Then Hololens looking amazing followed by a New South Park and then an amazing look at Uncharted 4, No Man's Sky, Last Guardian, FF7 Remake, and Shenmue 3. I mean at this point, it's just sky is the limit the mindset goes from "I'm looking forward to seeing more from Nintendo" to "Considering the insanity that's happened so far, WHAT could Nintendo have!?"

You start thinking like, "Nintendo already told us about Star Fox ... so what ELSE do they have?" and that's just an improper mindset for anything. Again, I completely understand the sentiment, but it's a mistake that people should rectify once they stop losing their minds.
If we come down for a second
and look at what Sony showed for PS4 owners this year (ignoring Vita owners for a second, just like Sony does :3) ... it's not much. There's some promises, some titles look good, but honestly ... we're going to be seeing almost all of that at E3 2016 again.

At E3 2016, 90% of what Nintendo talked about and showed this E3 we will have already played and devoured.

Absolutely! My kids and I just got Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, and Pikmin 3 recently and there is a bunch more we have yet to play through or buy yet.

I will give the Wii U this year. When Zelda is released consider it done. They will wind down the system considerably after this holiday season and then will gear up for the NX shortly after with mobile taking stage as well.

It's a shame really.
