I hope they go the full Bridget route and make males everywhere question their sexuality.

Popo knows whats up!

As for the game not deserving love... thats just ridiculous. The game is flawed, sure, as are Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, FFVI, etc. But its almost asinine to have not enjoyed those games, whereas now its somehow fundamentally wrong to like FF7, as if its detractors hold the flaws to be some god given truth that the game is factually bad.

The game has beautiful pre-rendered graphics, an outstanding musical score, some fantastic atmosphere in parts, great animations during combat that give good impact to your actions, an interesting materia system, real Limit Breaks for the first time that just felt beyond epic... but a bad translation and inconsistent graphics somehow override that?

Come on, its fine to not like the game, but its far from terrible. Add that to that that this was a lot of people's first foray into RPGs, and was accessible enough to get a good chunk of them to delve further into the genre, and it seems pretty clear that the game deserves it fans for a good mixture of reasons.

Anyways, sorry for the rant, not trying to soapbox or anything. Back to HYPE MODE. This game could possibly have even better hair than ff15, and better roads too! How is that even possible??? Have you seen the hair and roads in 15? Fuckin Square man.

No, Chrono Trigger is perfect. I have no idea what you're talking about. :D

In all seriousness, I was thinking yesterday what it would be like to have, not a remake on PS4, but a "demake" on SNES of FFVII, in the style of Chrono Trigger. That would be an amazing game.

I've always wanted to play that, but when looking into it I found multiple versions, and was not sure which one was supposedly the good one.

Or maybe we have a valid opinion based on our experiences with the game? I'm not shitting on the game because it's cool to do so, I'm saying I don't like it because I first experienced it in 2014, not 1997, and it had dated horribly. EVERY other Final Fantasy game I've played - 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 12 had held up far, far better and felt less dated by far than 7.

7s graphics actively detracted from the game and more than once I couldnt figure out how to progress due to blurry interactive element in the series. The horrendous blocky models failed to convey any emotion and genuinely made it hard for me to be emotionally invested in the game's story, and this wasn't helped by the games genuinely HORRIBLE translation. There are whole scenes that lack the context in the translation to make sense of what is happening.

I'm EXCITED for the remake, because it'll hopefully fix a lot of my issues. The gameplay of VII is fine, the bits of the story I could follow had potential. But this is one of the few games where the graphics genuinely did detract from it for me, and the translation in particular is the one thing I picked out as the WORST part of the PS1 game when I played it last year. As I said, the translation alone justifies playing this for me.

Chrono Trigger, EarthBound, Final Fantasy VI and the like are drastically different in design compared to Final Fantasy VII.

I "like" Final Fantasy VII, but it's flaws are glaring and severe - not minor. I've always found it something of a chore to play. I won't be checking out this remake, but I'm interested in hearing about what has been changed (improved?).

I think I played the one that was pretty decent. I'm not sure it's quite what I'd really like, but it's surprisingly good, yes. Not that I put a lot of time into it! I remember keeping up with a project over at RHDN a while back that was improving that version, too. I should see how that turned out!

I'm not sure it's quite as drastically different as one would think. I always felt like FFVII, from a gameplay standpoint, occupied a sort of strange middle ground between FFVI and Chrono Trigger, with its own PSX-era foibles. I can seriously envision FFVII working on the level of CT. Or going a middle ground again, and shifting back to random battles but Chrono Trigger-style exploration.

If I had the skill, it'd be cool to work on that sort of project. But then, if I were to put in that much effort, I'd just make something original that I wouldn't get a C&D from S-E on and actually make some money off it!

I was not attempting to invalidate one's opinion, but if your opinion is that OTHER people should not like the game because of flaws that were too severe for you to enjoy it, then in MY opinion, that is dumb.

I even said in that very post, the game isn't so good that its wild to think some would not like it, but that was not my point. Saying the game doesn't deserve its fans is just silly.

Earthbound has flaws that, in my opinion, are much worse than FFVII's. But, I would not say that the game does not deserve its fanbase when Mother got announced, because that is silly. I just don't like the game, but I think its super cool that diehard fans are finally getting an official version of the game.

Hopefully that clears things up and we can go back to being excited about how fucking excellent this e3 was.

There are a lot of things I dislike about FF7. I don't really like the Materia system, I don't care for the heavy use of mini-games(though I think FF7 is better about them than the annoying card games that haunted the rest of the series on PS1), and the story feels like a bunch of whiny teenagers crying their angst through the day. The game is like the interactive representation of a Linkin Park album, and I half expect Cloud to suddenly belt out "CRAWLING IN MY SKIN" at any possible moment.

HOWEVER

There are also things I like. I do like the limit breaks and think they make a very interesting component of the combat system. I enjoy many of the challenging extras added in, such as the Weapons and the uber summon spells hidden in the end game. I like some of the character designs, in particular Cid and Barrett. I'm tired of everybody looking like a boy band reject. More Japanese RPGs need chain-smoking crusty old dudes who speak in swear and are probably certifiable. Cait Sith was another character I enjoyed because of his uniqueness, even if I didn't care as much for his abilities. The music was well done, and at the time the FMVs blew me away.

I also realize that FF7 was released in the middle of a major transition in gaming. As a result, there are missteps in the way certain things were handled...but I'm willing to forgive those early stumbling blocks, including the Popeye arms. I look forward to seeing what becomes of this remake and hope it comes out well.

As much as I have always loved FFVII, I have never really wanted a remake of it. Most especially now when Nomura and Toriyama are the ones reigning over the series. If it was a straight HD upgrade then fine, but I can't help but feel they will try and sneak all that terrible Advent Children bullshit into it. No, ta.

BUT, we've only seen less than a minute of CG trailer so I will remain slightly hopeful.
