The big hook for VR is immersion. With stereo displays, head tracking, etc, it's a lot more than having a big TV right in your face (though that's cool too, for personal display/etc). If you've got an Android phone and haven't tried Cardboard, that's something inexpensive to play with. Some of the demos have the kind of "put on goggles, look around another world" experience.
