Well to be fair, Dwarf Fortress is intentionally designed to be byzantine, uninviting, and idiosyncratic. It's one of the most hardcore games you could ever choose to play. I honestly believe the barrier to entry was made that harsh to act as a filter. Take that as you will.

Gnomoria is the gold standard of Dwarf Fortress-esque gameplay that's actually designed to be played by a normal human being.

If you want more games not entirely unlike Dwarf Fortress, but a bit easier to get into, check out this guy's video:

I know about Gnomoria, and I've played a bit, and its alright. The thing that always got me about DF was the stories that could come out of it. There's no other game that can do that. That's what I was interested in. I'm keeping a close eye on some other games somewhat in the same vein (Timber and Stone, Stonehearth) but I'm not really sure. That, and I like the fact that there is full on sieges and you get get groups into the hundreds. Stuff like that is what interests me, but the gameplay itself is... not all that fun, and far from inviting.

If you get a 3DS check out Link bettween Worlds, my favorite Zelda of all time, and I've been a fan of the series since 1998.

I hate Asteroids and any other game that uses its controls. You know those ice levels so many games had where you're sliding around all over the place because the developers thought it would be different and interesting? Well if you love those levels play Asteroids and its spawn. They are whole games of that.

I wasn't even born when the game came out though so I guess maybe that factors in.

I love Asteroids. The arcade original, Atari 2600 port, whatever. Fun game.

Fun fact: a game similar to Asteroids was released in the arcades in 1980 and then later ported to the Vectrex. It's literally called "Rip Off."

I always loved how bright and glowy the bullets are on the arcade cabinet. Unfortunately can't get that kind of luminescence from MAME.

So Rip Off is the built in MINEFIELD on the Vectrex. Interesting. I had a neighbor I knew as a kid who had one, got a lot of fun out of that and especially the arcade conversion of Star Trek.

All the Japanese games you love will inevitable succumb to dumb fanservice or otaku pandering and there's nothing you can do about it. Here's a list of casualities from the top of my head:

Gradius
DoDonPachi
Metroid
Wizardry
...
Final Fantasy
Atelier
Etrian Odyssey
and
Fire Emblem (Now with butler and maid classes!)

Face it, if it exists, it will get a dose of otaku pandering sooner or later.

You left out Zelda with Hyrule Warriors. Big boobed antagonist for the win!

Now I am just waiting for the gritty reboot of Mario with a giant cleavage baring Princess Peach. I mean, I guess the Mario costumes in Tekken for the Wii U counts for that?

If not, the Bayonetta one should do.
