Does it damage my game, console, or VMU if I insert or take out the VMU during gameplay?

If the game has an autosave feature it could ruin your save. That's about all I can think of.

Nope. I've been doing it for 15 years. No problems yet... Just don't take it out whilst the game is saving (a given).

Just because there's an animation on the screen doesn't mean you can't treat it like any other memory card.

So long as you don't mess with the VMU while the game's saving, you'll be fine.

Thats the problem. I am unfamiliar with the memory cards. I stopped playing games with PSX where I had bad memories with 3rd party cards that randomly deleted your saves and got back into gaming with the Xbox 360 days.

As mentioned the VMU can be swapped when the game is not in the save mode. Due to some games having an Auto Save feature, best to swap VMUs either with console off or when game is ONLY in the Title screen. Imagine pulling the VMU during a random auto save and wiping out ALL the saves on a memory card. Has not happened to me, but I would not risk it.

What are some of the games on DC that uses auto-save? I thought auto-save was a feature that came with HDD-consoles.

No idea of a comprehensive list. Just a good practice on ANY console to pull a memory card only while it is turned off or just at the Title screen to avoid the risk of wiping out all the saves.

I haven't come across a single game that auto saves without having some kind of warning on screen, informing you that the game is saving. Plus, even if there wasn't one, every time a game saves or loads, a symbol flashes on the VMU screen.
