I'm not saying it'll remain the best and I'm not saying other gens are total crap. Something better might come along or the games may eventually not hold up as well as other gens, but right now number 7 is king.

The 7th generation of gaming is currently the best ever.

The list of juggernauts is stunning. Names like Bioshock, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect, The Last of Us, Skyward Sword, Mario Galaxy, Arkham Asylum, Dark Souls, Journey, and The Walking Dead don't even scratch the surface. And that doesn't even account for the DS/PSP libraries or more focused segments like indies and 360 shmups.

It's a great day to be a gamer as these titles are sliding into a price point that is absurdly low. Don't miss out, amigos.

I said this exact thing earlier in the topic. Let me see if i can recover it....

Found it! It's on page 343 if your curious.

anyways, here was the post:

"The last two generations are the best in gaming history. All of them are amazing, but i think that these last two have a lot of diversity and can give anyone anything.

do you like hard, challenging platformers? Indies, (some) Sonic games, Rayman Origins/Legends, and the Mario titles are for you.

are you more casual, laid back? Play some Guitar Hero Or Call of Duty.

Do you love sprawling open worlds? Fallout, Skyrim, the newer LEGO games, Infamous, GTA, or Saints Row.

Like hardcore shooters? Fallout, Deux Ex, Halo (maybe), Uncharted (on hard difficulty) and Xcom.

but, i digress. I love all generations, but these are the pinnacle to me. :D"

Also wanted to add that Licensed games have been amazing. the Arkham Series, Ghostbusters, & all Telltale games are great, and i'm sure i'm missing some others.

In terms of business practices though, I would say this last generation has been the absolute worst. With the releasing unfinished games and patching them along the way, on-disc or overly-priced DLC, those Skylander and Amiibo cash-grab figures (which I guess is another more expensive form of on-disc DLC)... don't even get started on free-to-play and stuff like Candy Crush.

Every generation before these last two, you bought the game, and that was it; you owned it and that was the final thing.

Thank god for stuff like GOG.

In terms of the games themselves in this generation, yeah, lot's of creativity going on.

Yeah I wouldn't argue that. The business practices of a lot of companies are very iffy on how they handle DLC and releasing quality product, but I do feel that there was an immediate response to that with a lot of games being held back to make better. Heck, GTA V on PC came out incredibly smooth and very well optimized. As for the Skylander/amiibo argument, I couldn't disagree more. I see those products like a modern action figure. With Skylanders/Disney Infinity, you pay for your favorite characters to play in story campaigns and various game modes.

With Amiibo, I see them as a system wide DLC pass. Have the Link Amiibo? You have dlc costumes for mario kart, new weapons in Hyrule Warriors and the Link AI in Smash Bros and probably much more in future titles. I find that to be well worth the cost of admission for myself.

I feel like people who see them as cash grabs, believe so on a collectibility standpoint and not a practical standpoint.

Issues with picture:

- It should say Current Gen not Next Gen
- Best Buy/GS exclusives are very very rarely part of the picture, usually they are meaningless prop changes (eg. horse armor, gun skin, etc.), a better representation in this picture would be a different colored frame.
- Microtransactions also are very rarely a part of the picture and more than likely either just:
- - The same as the Best Buy exclusive
-or-
- - Change the pacing, by skipping grinding or other things that you could just play the game for, so a better representation would be the artist getting airbrushes to help him paint faster. :P
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I totally agree. I think that creativity has reached an all-time high this gen, while the business model has reached an all-time low.

Yeah, i really, really dislike the idea of Amiibos. They are, without a doubt, worse than Skylanders. Not only are they really overpriced, but in some games where they unlock characters (like Codename: Steam) to get each character, you have to buy each figure. Let me do the math for you. $12 a figure, not even counting tax, means that your paying, essentially, $38 for 3 DLC characters. the Kicker? the game costs $40. (and that's not even counting the inflation of those figures in question) IMO, they are much, much worse than DLC.

I think that DLC can be done well. (like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. you pay $5 for a entirely new level, where you participate in a level from the movies).

There should also be a 1980 Mona Lisa.

Three Mona Lisas side by side.
First one is standard.
Second one is just text that says MONA LISA.
Third one is just text that says TELE-GAMES 1506.

I simply think that looking back, few 7th Generation games are going to be added to the repertoire of classics and worthwhile games. There's good stuff, but not much that I would be comfortable to list alongside The Secret of Monkey Island, Doom or Thief II: The Metal Age.

In that regard, I think the decade between 1990 and 2000 encompasses the highest number of great video games. Many genres reached their peak or got most of their good games during this period. In generation terms, that's two generations, the 4th and the 5th.

Personally, I feel the changes in how games were developed after 2004 to have been very harmful to good design. Firing your whole staff after making a game and getting a brand new one for the next simply isn't as conductive to improving games as a stable studio is.

EDIT: Note that this is a sophism of sorts since there are no artistically important video games released before 1980 so there are only 3.5 decades to choose from

That picture is hilarious. The Season Passes have gotten completely ridiculous by this point and it's at utmost issue that day one DLC is common place and acceptable now. That's just terrible.

And how/why is this in the unpopular gaming opinions thread? lol, this stuff is true bullshit.
