Therein lies the rub. Something cannot be addictive unless someone is susceptible to addiction. That's why someone saying "video games are addictive" I do not believe is inherently true. It's a case by case basis per person.
Like I said, it's a little sticky. Video games in general aren't inherently addictive I completely agree there, but some are designed with addiction in mind.

Drugs are a bad comparison to begin with because it's comparing psychological addiction to physical dependency.

I seriously need to find a way to cure this start a game, get stuck and frustrated, and inevitably quit thing I've gone through on the past few years. So far this year(at least since returning to the site after that long hiatus because of crazy work overtime) I've rage quit a good ways into Quest for Camelot(bats, easiest enemy in EVERY other game except zeldas and this one but this just makes zelda's look like childs play compared especially when multiple ones gang up from either side), and pokemon ranger isn't far off. It just seems like whenever they toss the 2 or 3 pokemon captures at me, and it end up being ones that require more than 4 loops I tend to have trouble capturing even when I attempt to seperate one off to capture somehow(looking at you Team go rock geodude in korokka tunnel :x ). I really want to beat these games but dang these moments of getting stuck(and stuck for a few days or more straight) are getting annoying...

I think many games are designed with similar hooks as MMOs. Obviously, those tend to be more overt about it, since part of the model is to keep people coming back month after month - though many F2P games are worse.

With players actively participating in games, it lets them stand in for real-life achievement. To a fair point, that's fine, good even. You can get that rush of seratonin n' dopamine or whatever because the game said you got to level 10/got a high score/unlocked something and thus are cool.
MMOs are designed to always be dangling some carrot in front of you, so you have that next thing to go for...but most games do the same thing on some level.

Drugs aren't an entirely off comparison, since what a lot of them tend to do is boost chemical output. Video games don't directly do that, but they do provide an environment where it might be easier, and certainly more consistent, to get that spike of satisfaction or happiness. Maybe not the same as being physically dependent on it, but motivationally, it might get a lot harder to put in the time and effort into getting that same feeling out of real life.

Anybody play Dwarf Fortress? I'm considering trying it again, just because of all the fun little stuff that can happen. But I'm also interested in trying something else in the same vein as far as developing story and such goes.

Saying that, am I wrong in thinking Crusader Kings II would be something to possibly look at?

I approve.

Just a heads up - I believe you need to tell the R5 that the patch expects a header for Seiken Densetsu 3. Otherwise you'll get freezing on the title screen.

Thanks for the heads up. I was looking at Super Famicom games with English translation patches and was surprised by quite how many there are. Some really interesting titles as well like Live-A-Live and Treasures of the Rudras.

Blown my game budget for the month and The Old Blood and Witcher 3 aren't even out yet. Looks like I'm having an imagination christmas this year. Again.

Fire Emblem If greed shenanigans:

http://www.siliconera.com/2015/04/29/fi ... -versions/

“Yes, that’s exactly it,” responds Yamagami. “If we were to put the content of both sides into one, we’d have no choice but to set the price as [the value of] two games, and that wouldn’t be fair to players that are just going to play one route.”

That's funny, because Front Mission 3 pulled this off without costing the price of two games.

You pay to receive everything up until chapter five, and once you make a decision, you will have to download everything from chapters six, onward, for the respectful route. The second download is free because you have already paid. If you want to try the alternative version, you have to buy DLC in the same way those with physical copies will.

Another dangerous precedent. If an idea like this catches on we'll all be paying double price for the Skyrims/Fallouts/GTAs of the world. I'm constantly on the fence about this stuff though. I would think a game like GTA costs a ton more to make than say, Mortal Kombat X. So should they be the same price?

Weird.

Not totally the same, but I never liked seeing two versions of every Pokemon game either.
