What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

RTS, FPS, Sports, Adventure, etc.

That's nice but we are not talking about GRAW 2 (which lets you save anywhere you want). We are talking about the original Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter developed by GRIN for PC.
Try Arma 3 with AI mods, they throw down the gauntlet at you: Grenades, GL's, heck even rocket-propelled bitchslaps.
It may be difficult but when you start introducing mods that throws the original developer balance out the window.
ExedExes wrote:So those 2 games you mentioned -- just as hard as GRAW?
Operation Flashpoint started a series of games that eventually lead to the ARMA franchise. Yes these are very difficult games, because they are hyper realistic simulations, the complete opposite of Call of Duty style gameplay. Player damage, ballistic models, AI, terrain impediment, wind, etc. is all modeled as accurately as possible to convey a hardcore simulation. But while Operation Flashpoint and its sequels, as well as ARMA and its sequels are difficult, they are entirely fair. If you take your time and play smart, you will survive. Most of the time the battlefields in those games are huge giving the player all kinds of options in their assault tactics. And the friendly AI is actually GOOD. However, GRAW on PC is not fair with its super human enemy AI, super dumb friendly AI, and it's not even remotely an accurate representation of reality in ballistic models or damage simulation. GRAW PC is way harder than ARMA in sheer balancing issues alone. I speak from actual experience.

So when are you planning to go through Dark Forces and Dark Forces 2? I also picked up Republic Commando, along with Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. I don't think I'll start them until after I get through at least part of my summer challenge, but I'm hoping to at least beat another one of them this year.

I was midway through Dark Forces when I lost my save and had to start over. And I had been stuck on the mission where you have to go through that Imperial base with the giant elevator in the middle for a long time, then got past it, then lost the save, so I didn't have a huge amount of motivation to continue. But I do want to beat it, so at some point I'll pick it up again.

Ah, so simulated FPS. I never knew there was such a thing. But if the AI is actually *good*, then that wouldn't be a problem!

Oh yeah man, hardcore stuff. Governments use a variant of ARMA called VBS for legit training purposes. https://www.bisimulations.com/ ARMA is to Call of Duty as say Falcon 4.0 would be to Ace Combat. Realism versus arcade, that sort of thing.

I wouldn't go so far as to call my experiences with ARMA fun, but I would say it's intellectually stimulating from a tactical assault and battlefield siege perspective. The games are only difficult if you rush, proper planning and sequential execution are the keys to success. (Definitely not games for impatient FPS Rambo junkies.) But because of this slow strategic nature, beating an ARMA game can take quite a long time.

Aint that the truth. I have loaded up matches in ARMA 2 and let the computer battle it out while I watched from a distance. It is just a fascinating simulator. But after I broke my legs climbing down a ladder three times, I gave up on it for awhile.

Not in the game, of course. This was totally real life.

Doesn't that also describe nearly every ladder in an FPS ever? FEAR is the only game I can reliably climb down ladders because you have to use the ladder to get on it.

Most of the time in games now, I find the best way to jump onto a ladder so I can catch it as I fall. Otherwise I just drop down and take the health hit.

That was another thing that sucked about Doom 3; it was about an inch's difference between "fall and take no damage" and "fall and lose half your health".
