I'm no stranger to a nightmare Ghost Recon final mission; play GR2 on your sixth-gen console of choice. How does restarting the entire mission sound every time you die? No checkpoints!Exhuminator wrote:I went back and looked at my HowLongToBeat time for this game. It was 29h 30m for the whole game. So divide that by 11 missions = about 2.68... so just over two and a half hours per mission. The last mission was the hardest for me though, it is a nightmare man.ExedExes wrote:So the next mission is gonna be about 4-5 hrs?
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

Sounds like a game I will never play. I just don't have the patience anymore for sadistic game design like that. The only reason I stuck with GR:AW on PC was because I developed a grudge against the game.ExedExes wrote:How does restarting the entire mission sound every time you die? No checkpoints!

I found a video of the GR2 final mission, this is the Gamecube port. I understand you *can* save your game on the Xbox version, supposedly. I can't count the number of times I had to restart this, and look at the comments!Exhuminator wrote:Sounds like a game I will never play. Yeah, GRIN. Its face laughs at your pitful, pathetic attempts to get through this game.

Yep. That is the smile of a game that plays you.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I've made it a good chunk of the way into the Quake II: The Reckoning mission pack. It's...kind of buggy, at least for me. I had a horrible time getting through the first area because one of the maps apparently decided it didn't like loading properly or saving, and some of those new lizard men enemies would jump into me and glitch out.
But I have successfully gotten through that first area and through the second, so I'm now in the third, the Industrial Region. I was surprised at how long Ground Zero felt, at least in the first part, but The Reckoning seems longer and has way more miniboss fights. Also, something about The Reckoning's level design, color palette, use of maps during briefings, and enemy usage makes it feel a lot more like Doom 2 than Quake II. Maybe it's all the enemies hidden behind sliding walls that keep opening up behind me when I grab an item.
As of right now, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think I like Ground Zero a bit more because it felt just like it was continuing on after Quake II, but after I managed to get through that horrid beginning, The Reckoning is starting to grow on me.

Speaking of monster closets, at least in the first two Doom games they were mostly there to ambush you for grabbing items. In Doom 3 about half of they were triggered just by walking down a damn hallway towards the next area.

Or opening a door. I got used to opening a door and immediately hooking into a corner to let whatever was about to attack jump into the room. Then I would reward the game's cheap shot with a round of buckshot in its back.MrPopo wrote:Speaking of monster closets, at least in the first two Doom games they were mostly there to ambush you for grabbing items. I just got Doom 3 and you're all starting to turn me off to it. But as long as it isn't as hard as GRAW has been I'll probably enjoy it more
Speaking of GRAW, that single man "find the armored vehicles" mission wasn't as bad as I thought. The drone you get really helps mark enemies ahead of time so there's no surprises and the checkpoints were frequent and fair. I did NOT like the ambush coming from the rear as you get to the exfil point to end this mission.
Supposedly this next mission is supposed to be just as easy and not terribly hard.

GRIN's just playing mind games with you. Don't worry, the real game starts soon after that.ExedExes wrote:Supposedly this next mission is supposed to be just as easy and not terribly hard.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Oh no, not at all. Just remember to never stand in front of a door when it opens and to turn around and shoot whenever you pick up an item, and you'll be fine. I made it through Doom 3 years ago with almost no problem, save for the freaky baby things. Whoever designed those, bravo. They are the stuff of nightmares.ExedExes wrote:I just got Doom 3 and you're all starting to turn me off to it. But as long as it isn't as hard as GRAW has been I'll probably enjoy it more![]()
