But the Apple Pippin was going to be a great gaming machine
How much did that set you back?

I tried to buy an Atmark branded pippin a few years ago, but the price fluctuates so much for what is really a paperweight

This is pure blasphemy to say on a retro gaming website, but now that (for all intents and purposes) it's over... it can no longer be denied.

The 7th generation of gaming is currently the best ever.

The list of juggernauts is stunning. Names like Bioshock, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect, The Last of Us, Skyward Sword, Mario Galaxy, Arkham Asylum, Dark Souls, Journey, and The Walking Dead don't even scratch the surface. And that doesn't even account for the DS/PSP libraries or more focused segments like indies and 360 shmups.

It's a great day to be a gamer as these titles are sliding into a price point that is absurdly low. Don't miss out, amigos.

Not only that but it was where a huge bevy of independent games have come out and are spectacular. You are right, it is a great time to be a gamer.

If I had to rank the generations from best to "worst".........

4th
3rd
7th
6th
5th
2nd

Didn't include 1st (not enough material in my possession to rank) and 8th (mostly sitting this one out).

Putting the second gen last doesn't mean I hate it. In fact, I love it. It's more of a testament to how good the other gens were.

So yeah. 7th is great but mainly because of the DS, PSP, and Wii. You couldn't pay me to play Red Dead Redemption or Arkham Asylum.

And 4th gen rules all. SNES, Genesis, PC Engine, Neo Geo. That just nukes the competition.

You should play Arkham Asylum. It is arguably the best Metroid game of its generation. (I'm serious. It's a really good game.)

I've played it. Didn't like it.

Modern "action-adventure" games and I don't mix.

Looking back, I don't think the 7th generation held up very well for me. Most of the games I was interested are still good or solid, but they have failed to rank alongside the classics or I feel no need to revisit them.

The DS is probably the biggest victim of this. Back in the day, I wanted like 20 games for it. Right now I want the Ouendan games and that's pretty much it.

And yeah, I have very little interest in Fallout 3, Arkham Asylum or Mass Effect. I've particularly grown to distate Fallout 3 more and more with time and regret putting the time to beat it back in the day

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are 7th gen, and they represent some of the things I like most about first person game design(and game design in general): open-ended gameplay, relatively large areas to explore as I wish, a solid challenge, and fun gameplay that I can get enjoyment out of in both five minute or five hour increments. The horror element just adds more frosting to a wonderful cake. So I have to give 7th gen credit.

Truth be told, if I'm going to play an open world game of any stripe, I prefer it be in first person, and while some RPGs managed this in previous decades, FPS design really started getting there around this generation. For me, that makes this gen worth taking an interest in.

I feel entirely the same about these things. When it comes to the stuff like the PS3 as much as I love it, and despite owning just physical games, thanks to the halfassed nature of how they're all made anymore I got rid of what I had when I got a PS4. The reasoning there is that none of the games that come out anymore work right when they're released, everything gets some patch to tear down some bad bugs or some broken mechanics that need proper tuning. I have no interest in holding onto a few PS3 games I really adore, but maybe (likely) have it fail in a decade and then not be able to re-patch the games so they still work right. I don't have to do that with pre-internet/hard drive crutched systems from the 80s, 90s, and some of the 00s. Even when it comes down to the DS and 3DS almost all the games get no patches, they work, since Nintendo has a pretty big stick in its ass about allowing unfinished stuff to come out.

Then again the DS I said I agree with too, the games just feel disposable, non-memorable for the most part, and the quality of them visually just isn't there much like with the N64 where it's like the atari 2600 of that form of media and is just too meh to stand up to following generations.

I'll say this much given the budget pricing I have seen Sony play with on re-package deals if they decide to throw a 4 game package of Uncharted out there I'm buying it day one as I want to do those again and I never did get much time on the Vita game so it's worth that alone. I'd love to play Dragon's Crown again too and a few others.

The 2D games on the DS still hold up pretty well for me. I agree 3D games are showing their age in the same way as 5th gen consoles.
