I remember beating a buddy who was big in the local Soul Calibur 2 scene, and I pretty much wiped the floor with him. All he did for the next hour was complain about his controller and refuse a rematch.

Well, I mean, it's not like you really won or anything, so. Just sayin'.

Hey, it was his fault for talking shit. I was pretty good at fighting games in my day.

Whenever he lost a match in Soul Calibur he would very loudly proclaim that his controller was malfunctioning.

I had a friend years ago who would do the same thing when we played fighting games against each other and I got on a winning streak. So I'd suggest we switch controllers. He'd always shut up after that. The funniest was Super Smash Bros. on N64. One time he gave me a crappy third party controller and I still kept beating him. He swore he'd never play Super Smash Bros. again after that because "the game just hates me and it's not programmed fair". Never would he admit I was simply better than him! Dude was older than me.

PCs suck so much.

I seriously can't understand why Blu-Rays didn't take off on PC like they did on consoles. I used to think that PC was just lagging behind consoles the way they did until 2005 or so with DVDs, but it seems that no one is ever going to start shipping PC games on Blu-Ray.

Heck, I had a hard time finding even a good Blu-Ray playback program for my PC.

The problem is the only thing pushing Blu-Ray for PC is gaming; consumer software doesn't need more than a DVD (which was not true for the CD to DVD transition) and people do not use a PC for their primary movie watching platform (laptops are a different story for travelers). And even gaming is transitioning to full digital which removes the need for getting consumer adoption of high density storage media.

When I was younger I used to destroy my brother at Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, and Eternal Champions. He would always - always - claim that I was "cheating" because, in his words, "all you do is kick!"

My fiance LOVES fighting games. But I can make her soooo irate if I just get her in a corner and crouch kick her to death. It's such a dirty path to success and it works in so many games. I only do it if she gets cocky though.

Yeah, I had two older brothers who were WAY older, by 8 and 10 years. We would always play Mortal Kombat, Eternal Champions and Street Fighter II and they would always lose to me. I put the, "I won't use special moves," rule on them to make it easier. They once blindfolded me and I still beat them.

I think I still have the strangle marks around my neck from the controller cords!

Whenever he lost a match in Soul Calibur (on the Dreamcast...because I am both ancient and awesome), he would very loudly proclaim that his controller was malfunctioning. (He was a button-masher and would play as Seung Mina. This strategy worked well when we were all learning the game, but when I actually learned to play as Astaroth and Mitsurugi, his winning streak came to an abrupt end. )

I love how much that game rewards non-mashing. I also love when people get into unstoppable move combos with Maxi and just walk right off the edge.

Haha, yeah, I know. No worries. I was just having a nostalgic moment. My hobby has changed a lot over the years, but it's nice to think on how things used to be sometimes and remember past glories.

I remember when Soul Calibur 2 came out in arcades, and after waiting a few weeks for the lines to die down, I decided to give it a go. After a couple of rounds, the guy who ran the arcade came over and played me. Truth be told, I hadn't really wanted to do multiplayer, and he was kind of a jerk, so after a round, I used Xinghua to knock him into a wall and onto the ground, and I never let him up again. He cussed me out a lot for that...
